This story follows the elderly rabbit Uncle Wiggily on his quest for fortune, where after a brief chat with a slow snail, he finds a large watermelon on a hill, initially mistaking it for a football. A friendly grasshopper corrects him, and after they eat the juicy inside, the grasshopper cleverly helps Uncle Wiggily hide within the hollowed rind to escape an approaching hungry bear. The grasshopper then pushes the melon down the hill; it eventually breaks open upon hitting a stone, tossing Uncle Wiggily safely onto the sand while the flying pieces frighten the pursuing bear away, allowing the unharmed rabbit to continue his journey.
