"The Devoted Friend" by Oscar Wilde follows little Hans, a kind-hearted gardener whose cheerful cottage and blooming flowers are the envy of his village. His closest companion, a wealthy miller, fills his mouth with eloquent speeches about true friendship while steadily draining Hans of his time, labour, and livelihood. Each demand comes wrapped in the language of selflessness, leaving Hans too grateful — and too trusting — to resist. Wilde builds the story's tension through darkly comic irony, as Hans's goodwill is stretched thinner with every visit the miller makes.
