Description

In "The Errors of Santa Claus," two families prepare for Christmas, with each member selecting a gift ostensibly for another family member who supposedly "believes in Santa Claus absolutely." Ironically, each chosen gift—a train, a doll needing sewing, cigarettes, a card set with betting chips, whisky and a whistle—perfectly suits the giver's own interests, which they indulge in secret on Christmas Eve. The story humorously suggests the "blind" Santa Claus then mixes up the presents, delivering each item to the person who actually desired it all along. Thus, on Christmas morning, everyone is happily occupied with their "incorrect" gift (fathers with the train, mothers sewing, boys smoking, etc.), leading to the amusing conclusion that everything "straightened itself out" and Christmas worked out fine despite the comical errors and underlying self-interest.
