Dorothea Puente, also known as the Death House Lady, was a serial killer who operated in Sacramento, California in the 1980s. She killed tenants of her boarding house and cashed their government-issued checks. Puente had a troubled childhood and was sent to an orphanage where she was abused. She had multiple marriages and divorces, and had a history of criminal activities before becoming a serial killer. Puente would kill her tenants and then cash their checks. She was eventually caught and convicted of nine murders. She died in prison in 2010.
