Asylum seekers in the UK will no longer be allowed to use taxpayer-funded taxis for most medical appointments starting in February, as the government ends the "unrestricted use" of taxis. This change was announced by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood following a BBC investigation into the cost of travel, which found widespread and sometimes very long taxi journeys. Under the new rules, taxis will be restricted to only "exceptional" cases that require direct Home Office approval, such as for people with physical disabilities, chronic illnesses, or pregnancy-related needs.
