Episode 9 of Turning Points: History’s Greatest Battles explores the Battle of Lepanto (1571), one of the largest naval battles in history and the final great clash of oar-powered warships. The battle was fought between the expanding Ottoman Empire, led by Admiral Ali Pasha, and the Holy League, a temporary alliance of Christian powers commanded by Don John of Austria. Despite political divisions, Europe united to halt Ottoman control of the Mediterranean. In the Gulf of Patras, the two massive fleets collided in brutal ship-to-ship combat. The turning point came when Ali Pasha was killed and his flagship captured, shattering Ottoman morale. The Holy League won a decisive victory, destroying or capturing around 200 Ottoman ships and killing tens of thousands of men. Though the Ottomans rebuilt their fleet, their aura of naval invincibility was gone. Lepanto stopped further Ottoman expansion into Western Europe and became a powerful symbol of unity, strategy, and resistance. It marked the end of the galley era and the beginning of a new age in naval warfare. #Tags:
