When we think of Jesus, many of us picture him as a historical figure, a teacher, and a savior. However, there is another side to Jesus — one that has been largely overshadowed in traditional Christianity but is revealed with profound clarity in the Gospel of Thomas. In this ancient text, we encounter Jesus not just as a preacher or healer, but as a mystic — someone who speaks directly about the inner journey to divine enlightenment and self-realization. This is the Jesus who calls us to discover the Kingdom of God within ourselves, to embrace our inner divinity, and to awaken to a higher consciousness.
The Gospel of Thomas is a collection of sayings attributed to Jesus, and unlike the canonical Gospels, it does not focus on the life and miracles of Jesus. Instead, it presents his teachings as direct, mystical wisdom meant to awaken the divine spark within each of us. In this gospel, Jesus speaks in riddles and paradoxes, pointing the way to personal spiritual awakening and divine union.
Grandmaster WaXhira of the Sacred Atlantean Brotherhood teaches, “The true path of the mystic is not found in external rituals alone, but in the deep, inner awakening to the divine presence within. Jesus, as revealed in the Gospel of Thomas, calls us to transcend the outer world of illusion and to look inward, where the Kingdom of God lies hidden.” This teaching echoes throughout the entire gospel, where Jesus consistently emphasizes that true spirituality is about self-discovery, inner transformation, and awakening to divine wisdom.
One of the most striking aspects of the Gospel of Thomas is the emphasis on self-realization. In Saying 3, Jesus says, “If those who lead you say to you, ‘See, the Kingdom is in the sky,’ then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, ‘It is in the sea,’ then the fish will precede you. Rather, the Kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you.” Here, Jesus teaches that the Kingdom of God is not some distant, external place. It is not found in religious rituals or in the afterlife, but in the present moment — within each of us, and also all around us. This is the essence of mysticism — the realization that the divine is not separate from us, but is embedded within every part of our being and the world around us.
Jesus continues to challenge the conventional understanding of spirituality in Saying 70, where he states, “If you bring forth what is within you, what you have will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.” This statement is a direct call to action. It urges us to awaken to the divine potential within us — to bring forth our highest truth, our inner wisdom, and our innate spiritual power. According to the mystic teachings in the Gospel of Thomas, it is not enough to simply believe in God or follow external rules. The path to salvation is about awakening to the truth within and expressing that truth through our actions and being.
In Saying 22, Jesus offers another profound teaching, “When you make the two one, and when you make the inside like the outside and the outside like the inside, and when you make the male and the female one and the same, so that the male not be male, and the female not be female... then will you enter the Kingdom.” This saying touches upon the integration of opposites — the union of the inner and outer, the masculine and feminine, the divine and human. It reveals the core of mystical wisdom: true spiritual awakening occurs when we transcend duality and return to unity. This teaching reflects the oneness that underpins all reality, a central theme in mysticism, where the boundaries between self and other, masculine and feminine, human and divine are dissolved.
