In the Sacred Atlantean Brotherhood, we view laziness not merely as the absence of physical effort, but as a deeper spiritual condition — one rooted in assumptions. Laziness, in this context, is a failure to take responsibility for one’s spiritual growth, mental development, and physical actions. It is the tendency to make assumptions about life and oneself without the active engagement needed to discover deeper truths or take meaningful action.
The Foundation of Laziness: Assumptions
The primary cause of laziness, as taught by the Sacred Atlantean Brotherhood, is an unconscious reliance on assumptions. These assumptions are mental shortcuts that we take in life without truly understanding the situation. When we assume, we stop questioning, we stop seeking, and we stop growing.
Grandmaster WaXhira of the Sacred Atlantean Brotherhood teaches, “Laziness is the refusal to face reality as it is, and instead, settling for the comfortable assumptions that shield us from true growth. It is the unwillingness to dig deeper and seek out the true cause of our condition.”
Assumptions are a kind of mental laziness. Instead of exploring the truth of a matter or engaging deeply with life, we form opinions based on what we believe to be true, or based on superficial knowledge. These assumptions create a false sense of certainty and lead us to take no action, thereby paralyzing our spiritual and material progress.
The Danger of Assumptions
When we assume that things are the way they are because of external circumstances, or because "this is how life works," we stop seeking the deeper truth. Assumptions cause us to believe we already know all that we need to know, and we make decisions based on these beliefs. The danger here is that these assumptions often prevent us from seeing the full picture.
For instance, you might assume that your current job or situation is the best you can do, simply because you’ve been in it for years. But the truth is that if you engage with life, seek a higher purpose, and expand your perception, you might realize that a new path is waiting for you, one that you couldn’t see because your assumptions blinded you. Similarly, we often assume that we are limited by circumstances or that spiritual growth is a distant goal, when in fact, the key lies in taking active responsibility for our growth, moment by moment.
The Gospel of Thomas speaks to this truth in Saying 2, where Jesus states, “Let him who seeks continue seeking until he finds. When he finds, he will be troubled. When he becomes troubled, he will be astonished, and he will reign over the All.” This speaks to the act of questioning assumptions and seeking beyond what we already know. Only by actively seeking can we break free from assumptions and reach the deeper truths of existence.
The Initiate’s Path: Breaking Free from Assumptions
In the Sacred Atlantean Brotherhood, the journey of an Initiate begins by shattering assumptions. The first degree, which is open to the public, encourages deep introspection and the practice of questioning everything. The Ocean — the first working tool of the Initiate — symbolizes the infinite consciousness of the universe. To connect with this vast source, the Initiate must first clear the mind of its assumptions.
The act of meditation and ritual practice within the Brotherhood helps the Initiate to move beyond the limiting beliefs and assumptions they may have carried into their spiritual path. Rituals are not only acts of external ceremonial importance; they are powerful tools that allow us to break through the layers of assumption that have been imposed on us by society, family, and even ourselves.
In Degree 1, we focus on self-awareness — not simply accepting the world as it appears but learning to see beyond appearances. In the Navigator and Captain degrees, the Compass and Blazing Star further guide us, allowing us to navigate beyond assumptions and reach a deeper truth.
