Historic floods in our state have claimed over 100 lives. But while the headlines were keeping us up on the heartbreaking losses, one story stopped me in my tracks—and it hasn’t gotten nearly enough attention, so I want to talk about it here.In Laredo and Kerrville, Texas, 13 volunteer Mexican firefighters from the nonprofit Funda-si-on 911—fully trained, fully equipped—crossed the border to rescue people during the worst of the flooding. When both the mayor of Laredo and the federal government threw up their hands and said they had no more resources, these men didn’t wait for permission. They didn’t care about borders, policies, or politics. They saw humans in danger, and they acted. They risked their lives—that’s rescue over rhetoric—despite decades of strained relations, anti-immigrant policies, and nationalistic fear-mongering.Now that? That’s treasure.📜 Proverbs 10:2 Speaks on this Truth“Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value…” Let’s pause here. Many who voted for our current administration did so from fear—fear that “villainous outsiders” were coming to take our so-called “treasures,” or threaten our exceptionalism. So what did we do? We hardened our borders. We weaponized ICE. We fueled suspicion. And what do we have to show for it?No “great wall.” Just a trail of broken families, moral erosion, and policies sold as “safety” but rooted in self-preserving power grabs. That’s ill-gotten gain—profit built on fear, politics built on paranoia. It doesn’t last. It won’t save. And it certainly won’t stand before God.But the righteousness of those firefighters? It delivers from death. Not just symbolically. Literally.✨ Why This MattersWe live in a world of noise, nationalism, and scapegoats. But in that storm, righteousness still cuts through like a lifeboat to rescue. So, go on and build your fortune—but if you ignore the vulnerable, it’s empty. Raise your flag—but if you ignore your neighbor, that’s meaningless. Declare whatever you’re “exceptional about”—but if righteousness doesn’t flow like a river, it’s a sham.Heaven doesn’t count your treasures. And you’ll only be remembered as small and petty in the human story. So big shout out to Funda-si-on 911 thanks for showing us what it looks like to be a Good Samaritan, or should I say a Good Mexican. We can never thank you enough because you showed us that:Real wealth isn’t in your wallet—it’s in what you do when it costs you something.PrayerGod, help me choose righteousness that saves, even when it costs.Today’s ChallengeLook for one unjust “border” you’ve built—status, race, politics, or fear. Cross it in kindness: give, listen, speak up, or serve. Take that step. Be someone’s rescue.Because righteousness delivers from death. And rescue starts with you.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer.
