Proverbs 23:5Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.Proverbs Daily is a reader and listener supported program. We all need it to make it through life, so hearing someone tell us to, “Show restraint, don’t be so thirsty…” We’re all like, “Ahh, what?”And most of us know that feeling Oh too well—the moment we see breaking even in our scope…and whoosh it's gone and we’re like, “But I JUST got paid…and I’m already broke?”But remember: the person giving this wisdom didn’t struggle for money. He had plenty. Because money wasn’t a thing to him, he could put his students on game in a way no one else could.I know a man with more than enough money. Like…his life is secure, his kids’ lives are secure, even their kids’ kids are all set. But here’s the danger—they all know it.And because they ‘know’ it–it’s different. Now this is what he says, not me…He says that he looks at his kids and it just worries him: no real drive, no sincere passion, just the ease of always getting what they want. He said, telling them, “You’ll never have to work again a day in your life.” That was probably the worst thing he could’ve told his kids. Wow. I guess when money is the only safety net it becomes a trap. And because he has so much, trust becomes tricky. Relatives, so-called friends, business partners…he’s not always sure if they connect with him—or just his money.Proverbs 23:5 says Riches sprout wings and fly like an eagle…See money is a medium for energy, and in this context the energy is value. That’s why we call it “CURRENCY” because like electricity, value is meant to flow, to empower, not to be seized in your heart. So if you fixate on it, and money becomes the end game, you can easily forget why you’re climbing in the first place.Think about the old ladder metaphor. You can spend decades climbing, grinding, rising, only to wake up at the top and realize—you built the ladder against the wrong wall. All the wealth in the world can’t replace clarity, meaningful work, and relationships that matter. So here’s the check: Are your eyes locked on the cash—or on what actually matters? Keep your eyes on the right prize. Purpose, love, integrity, and wisdom—they carry you further than dollars ever will.Bottom Line:Chase purpose, not paychecks, and the payoff will always be worth it.🙏🏽 PrayerHelp me earn money wisely, but not lose focus, God.💡 Today’s Challenge:Take some money—cash or digital—and hide it somewhere. Forget it. When you rediscover it, let the surprise remind you: money flows, your focus shouldn’t.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer.
