Proverbs 1:18but these men lie in wait for their own blood, they ambush their own lives!Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. I’m your huckleberry. That’s just my game.”Man, I still get chills at that Tombstone scene. Johnny Ringo calls out Wyatt Earp and his brother, hungry for a fight. Wyatt shrugs, “I ain’t gonna fight you—ain’t no money in it.”But Ringo rages: “Don’t you have the guts to play for blood?”And then—out of the shadows—Doc Holliday steps forward in that perfect Hollywood silhouette: “I’m your huckleberry. That’s just my game.”Blood. It becomes the ultimate proof of seriousness—life and death. If you want to prove you’re real? Let’s go for blood.📖 Proverbs 1:18 shows us the trap:“These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush their own lives.”The young thugs in this passage thought strength, terror, and violence made them “real men.” But in truth—they were digging their own graves. What they meant for others, they set for themselves.🩸 Our Strange Romance with BloodsportHere’s the truth: humanity has a strange romance with blood sport. We glamorize carnage. We consume it like some kinda trauma-porn. We lust after blood as proof of power. And it’s not just the movies.Just yesterday, Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump gathered hundreds of U.S. generals at Quantico with a message as hard as penitentiary steel:* ⚔️ “The Department of Defense is dead. Welcome to the Department of War.”* 🚫 No more “beardo’s” — stricter grooming.* 📏 Strict height and weight enforcement.* 🪖 “No more fat generals and admirals!”* 👋 Resign if you don’t like it.* 💣 Trump chimed in: “If you don’t like what I’m saying, leave the room. There goes your rank. There goes your future.”It’s ironic. Everyone wants to “be the man.” But when you finally look at the one who supposedly makes it to the top of the heap—how many inhumane things had to be done just to get there?🙏 Blood and GodAnd then there’s God. Some people think He demanded blood too.Was God so wrathful, so uncontrollably angry, that only the blood of His Son could calm Him down? That vision of atonement makes God sound more like Johnny Ringo than the Father of Jesus Christ. But look again. The cross isn’t about appeasing divine rage—it’s about revealing divine love.Jesus doesn’t “play for blood” like the world. He pours Himself out to show that God suffers with us, not against us.Process theologians remind us: God is not a tyrant demanding payment. God is the relentless companion—persuading, luring, and loving creation toward healing. The cross, then, is God entering the worst of our violence and saying: 👉 “Even here, I will be with you. Even here, love wins.”💡 Real TalkThe world plays for blood— but Christ bleeds to end the game.PrayerLord, free me from bloodlust; make me love mercy.Today’s ChallengeWhen you feel pressure to prove yourself with toughness, power, or ego—choose compassion instead. Show your strength by lifting someone up, not cutting them down.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer.
