Proverbs 25:13Reliable friends who do what they say are like cool drinks in sweltering heat—refreshing!Proverbs Daily is a reader-supported publication. When you see the word “upgrade,” you’re simply invited to help me make the sacred positively contagious...thank you in advance for becoming a free or paid subscriber.“You and I must make a pact-We must bring salvation back- Where there is love…”If you know it, sing it with me: I’ll be there. That’s the Jackson 5’s classic from 1970. It was their first single not written by Motown’s in-house team, and it shot straight to No. 1. Michael was just 11 years old when he recorded it—think about that. Eleven years old, singing a promise of reliability, loyalty, and love. And I’ll never forget—when the Jackson 5 came to the Oakland Coliseum in about 1978 I’m a say…cause my little sister was about eight or nine years old. My mom took us to the concert, and my stepdad hoisted my little sister up to the stage, and Michael kissed her right on the cheek. AND WE NEVER HEARD THE END OF IT! That memory still lives with us, because it wasn’t just a concert—it was a moment of connection. A promise embodied in a song: I’ll be there.📖 Proverbs 25:13 in the Message Version says:“Reliable friends who do what they say are like cool drinks in sweltering heat—refreshing!”That’s an ancient truth that Michael and his brothers tapped into with their hit song. To be there. To show up. And just like it was in the Bible days, and like it was in the late 70’s…it’s still refreshing and relevant today!Just a few years ago Busta Rhymes and Kendrick Lamar did a song called Look Over Your Shoulder where they sampled that same Jackson 5 song. It was hot because reliability never goes out of style. The promise of being there—it’s timeless. Whether in friendship, family, or even music, it keeps showing up because we all need it.I want you to try this right now, think of someone in your life that has been there for you, especially when you needed them…and you were able to ‘like young Michael said, “Just look over your shoulder” and…they were right there. Picture that person right now in your mind…I’ll wait…you have them? Now if you have someone in your life like that and have that person on your mind, how ‘refreshing’ is that–right?💡 Here’s the prescription:Now if you feel like you don’t have reliable friends in your circle right now, become one. Be the kind of person who shows up, keeps their word, and pours life into others. You’ll attract people like that—and at the same time, you’ll repel the unreliable ones who only drain you.🔥 So Let’s Wrap it up:When life’s journey gets sweltering hot, nothing is more refreshing than knowing you have someone you can rely on.PrayerLord, help me be there, faithful just like You are.Today’s ChallengeBe that friend today. Call or text someone and show up in a small, practical way. It could be encouragement, a listening ear, or just checking in. Be the reliable refreshment someone’s soul is thirsty for.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer.
