Scientists who study fish behavior note that instincts take over before the fish has any chance to “think” (if we can call it that).✨ A flicker of light. ✨ A shimmer in the water. ✨ A tiny vibration. That’s all it takes. And then boom in a flash, desire overrules judgment. And the fish ends up in my belly! Cause it wanted something in it’s belly, and went after it, and fell for my trap…and now it’s in my belly. Yea, the lure is designed to work that way.And there are all types of ‘fishing lures’ right? Neon colors, some with feathers, and shiny spoons, and even rattles. But as wide and divers as the designs are, they all have one thing in common. What’s that? That hook! They promise food, fulfillment, and satisfaction. But that hook: delivers captivity.🧠 Instinct vs. IntellectNow, here’s where it gets interesting:* Fish don’t have much intellect, but they do have instinct.* Humans? We’ve got both.* Yet the battle between instinct and intellect plays out in us all the time. And if we’re honest, instinct often wins.Proverbs 6:25 gives us this warning:“Do not lust in your heart for her beauty, and do not let her captivate you with her alluring eyes.”The sage isn’t demonizing beauty. He’s showing us a truth: beauty can captivate, charm can overwhelm, allure can bypass intellect.Just like the lure in the water, it’s designed to appeal to your instincts. Before you even know it, you’re hooked.👀 The AllureThink about the words used—beauty and alluring eyes. They go straight to the human instinct for attraction, connection, and desire. It’s not about logic. It’s about fantasy. The imagination kicks in before the intellect has a chance to process.Let me quickly illustrate this.  Many of you know about the first time that I met my wife. Long and great story, but I'll make it short. I was a youth pastor in church and I was running late, the service had already started. So I didn't realize that the congregation was praying, but I just burst into the sanctuary, unknowing, I didn't realize how much noise I was making, so I just came on in.And D'Ann was visiting with her sister. She was visiting our church, and she turned around to see who was making all that noise during prayer, and I didn't know any of that. All I remember is looking up and she saw me and I saw her, and all I remember is seeing those pretty brown eyes. Now talk about fantasy, talk about getting hooked in less than a second. She was actually looking at me like, who is this fool? But all I remember was Pretty Brown Eyes ✨👀✨Well, what was that? What. 36 years ago? So I'm saying those alluring eyes, that's a real thing.🌎 Living Among LuresWe live in a culture that runs on lures. Ads, apps, influencers, filters—they all shimmer and shine with promises. And just like a fishing lure, they’re designed to bypass reason and hook us right where instinct lives.Proverbs reminds us: wisdom is learning to pause, let intellect catch up, and resist the pull of that hook!Cause that hook baby, is real!So Catch ThisDesire without wisdom is like a fish biting into that hook—it feels like life, until it doesn’t and ends up leading to captivity.🙏🏽 PrayerGuard my instincts, Lord, and sharpen my mind with wisdom💡 Today’s Challenge:Identify one “lure” today—a product, a post, or a person—that grabs you instantly. Pause. Don’t bite. Just notice it. And let wisdom speak to you.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer.
