Games of chance carved from knucklebones, clay, stone, ivory.Translation? Humanity has always been fascinated with chance. We want to know: âWhy did this happen?â âWhy did that happen?â âDid the dice just fall that way⌠or was something deeper behind it?âBut Proverbs steps in like: âRoll all you want. God gets the last move.âđŻ Chance, Chaos & the Human Story MachineLook at it. Proverbs 16:33 says: âWe may throw the dice, but the Lord determines how they fall.âWe roll looking for that coveted seven-eleven, seven-eleven â and all my Ice Cube fans, go on and finish it: âseven-even, back-door little JoeâŚâFor those that donât know: In street dice, 7 or 11 is the holy grail. Automatic win on the first throw. Thatâs what everybody wants right?â the hit, the lucky break. When we hit, we think: âGod must be happy with me.âWhen we crap out? âGod must be punishing me.âBut Scripture gives a bigger frame: Ecclesiastes 9:11 â âTime and chance happen to us all.âYes life feels random. Chaotic. Like weâre just knucklebones rolling across the universe.I wrote a rhyme once: âAnother day in paradise, feeling tossed like a pair of dice.âBut Wisdom gently pushes back : âEven when you throw it⌠God still determines how it falls.âYour roll. His result.đą Divine Determination > Lucky SocksWe all have our little superstitions â that ritual, that prayer, that âlucky hoodie,â that playlist that makes you feel like todayâs your day.Iâm not hatinâ. Roll the dice. Say your phrase. Wear your olâ stanky sock! But in the end? Give the outcome to the One who holds outcomes.Thatâs where Habakkuk 3:17â18 steps in (and I love this verse):âThough the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.Because even when the dice come up snake eyes, when chance doesnât favor you, when the board is stacked against you âtrust the God who determines the final fall. His sovereignty isnât random. His heart toward you isnât chance. His purposes donât roll on luck.đĽ RememberâŚYou may throw the roll â but God wrote the scroll. So let the scroll unfold, and your soul will be consoled.PrayerLord, I roll the dice â but You decide the fall.Todayâs ChallengeName one âlucky ritualâ you lean on â a habit, phrase, object, or vibe that helps you feel like things will go your way.You donât have to throw it out. Just hold it lightly. Then surrender the outcome to God:Trust Him with results, not your rituals.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer.
