Games of chance carved from knucklebones, clay, stone, ivory.Translation? Humanity has always been fascinated with chance. We want to know: “Why did this happen?” “Why did that happen?” “Did the dice just fall that way… or was something deeper behind it?”But Proverbs steps in like: “Roll all you want. God gets the last move.”🎯 Chance, Chaos & the Human Story MachineLook at it. Proverbs 16:33 says: “We may throw the dice, but the Lord determines how they fall.”We roll looking for that coveted seven-eleven, seven-eleven — and all my Ice Cube fans, go on and finish it: “seven-even, back-door little Joe…”For those that don’t know: In street dice, 7 or 11 is the holy grail. Automatic win on the first throw. That’s what everybody wants right?— the hit, the lucky break. When we hit, we think: “God must be happy with me.”When we crap out? “God must be punishing me.”But Scripture gives a bigger frame: Ecclesiastes 9:11 — ‘Time and chance happen to us all.’Yes life feels random. Chaotic. Like we’re just knucklebones rolling across the universe.I wrote a rhyme once: “Another day in paradise, feeling tossed like a pair of dice.”But Wisdom gently pushes back : “Even when you throw it… God still determines how it falls.”Your roll. His result.🌱 Divine Determination > Lucky SocksWe all have our little superstitions — that ritual, that prayer, that “lucky hoodie,” that playlist that makes you feel like today’s your day.I’m not hatin’. Roll the dice. Say your phrase. Wear your ol’ stanky sock! But in the end? Give the outcome to the One who holds outcomes. That’s where Habakkuk 3:17–18 steps in (and I love this verse):“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.Because even when the dice come up snake eyes, when chance doesn’t favor you, when the board is stacked against you —trust the God who determines the final fall. His sovereignty isn’t random. His heart toward you isn’t chance. His purposes don’t roll on luck.🔥 Remember…You may throw the roll — but God wrote the scroll. So let the scroll unfold, and your soul will be consoled.PrayerLord, I roll the dice — but You decide the fall.Today’s ChallengeName one “lucky ritual” you lean on — a habit, phrase, object, or vibe that helps you feel like things will go your way.You don’t have to throw it out. Just hold it lightly. Then surrender the outcome to God:Trust Him with results, not your rituals.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer.
