Proverbs 26:23Smooth talk from an evil heart is like glaze on cracked pottery.Proverbs Daily is a reader and listener supported program. As an emcee and a preacher, I absolutely LOVE the craft of putting words together to make people move. Here’s a rhyme I’ve been workshopping let me share it with you:“It’s the Super Cala Fraga/ Above stature Surpassing natural/I’ll snatch you up and zap ya with a double dose of Expi-alla doches /Don’t you know how close the Holy Ghost is? Closer than the air that’s in your noses!"Ahhhh!!! And the magic–the point that’s more addictive than anything: is being in a live crowd, spitting a rhyme, and feeling the people catch your words and watch that 'aha moment' happen in real time…where a punch line hits and everybody's like Ohhhh!!!! It's Priceless. Here’s another one in the chamber I haven’t used yet:“Understand dat what I created is animated/Wrote a rhyme and it leaped right off the pages/ Quoting 6th century sages/Like Thales of Miletus, 'Know Thyself' That’s just the way that the game was fabricated so don’t hate it–learn to play it."Now Proverbs 26:23 instructs us that people with evil intent understand this principle about words, and they use it to their advantage. The Message version uses the imagery of cracked pottery. A literal “cracked-pot” that’s all glossy and slick on the outside…able to tantalize and impress people with words and verbal triggers. But because there’s no integrity inside—ohh, the pot is cracked and therefore cannot hold anything of lasting value—so all that so-called slick talk is just that: slick talk.Hip hop, in particular, has mastered the art of using words to reach the hearts, minds, will, and emotions of generations. For the last 50 years, it’s been a tool—one that can uplift or manipulate. My goal is to wield this power to bring light, to inspire, to draw people closer to truth. To show that words with integrity can be electric, moving, and transformative. So, here’s what I’ve been working out in light of this Proverb, written in The Script Version:"23. Smooth talkers / Evil-hearted street walkers / Sound polished, but hollow, like glaze on chipped saucers / 24. They stalkers, but they walk up / Actin’ like it's all love / Every move fake / Haters hide hate / full of deceit but keep it tucked in they chest plate /"Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!This is a project I’ve been pouring years into: taking scripture, translating it into rhyme, not to overshadow its truth, but to ‘Re-Present’ it in the heart-felt language of our generation. I want a whole gang of Emcee’s to join in. To translate Sacred Text in ways that spark minds, elevate the conversation in hip hop, and uplift the world. I wanna be slick with words, but I want those words to stick where they go straight to the hearts for those that need that inspiring word to challenge and transform them.So Remember:Words without integrity are just slick; but truth spoken from the heart sticks.🙏🏽 PrayerWhen I speak–let my words align with my heart.💡 Today’s Challenge:Think about your own words—are they just slick or truly sturdy? What are you ‘known for always saying’? Is it something that’s really from your heart? Does it reflect the best version of yourself? And if it doesn’t there’s always room for a remix.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer.
