Herbie was just starting out â nervous, talented, trying to keep up with the legend himself.Midway through a live set, he hits what he later called âthe completely wrong chord.â The band freezes â but Miles doesnât. He doesnât stop. Doesnât scowl. Doesnât signal him off.Miles Davis hears the mistake⊠takes a breath⊠and builds on it. He bends the note, reshapes the sound, and turns that wrong chord into improvisational gold.đș Thatâs the moment most people miss â not because the opportunity wasnât there, but because they werenât ready to respond. When the moment hit, they were still trying to get ready.đđœ You canât get ready when the spotlight hits â you gotta stay ready.đ Proverbs 22:29 says: âDo you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.âThat word âskilledâ in Hebrew is ŚÖžŚÖŽŚŚš (mahir) â it means quick, prompt, accomplished. Itâs that kind of readiness that looks effortless â but itâs anything but easy. Itâs muscle memory in motion. Itâs reflex. Rhythm. Repetition. Itâs years of hidden practice showing up in one holy moment of performance.đ§ Letâs break it downMost people miss their king-sized opportunities because they mistake potential for preparation. They want the platform before theyâve mastered the process. The crown before theyâve built the character. The stage before theyâve learned the scale.Thatâs why readiness is more than routine â itâs a rigor. Thatâs why excellence is more than excitement â itâs endurance. Thatâs why success isnât a surprise â itâs the side effect of staying ready. To be mahir means youâve rehearsed your reflexes. Youâve trained your timing. Youâve polished your process until itâs second nature.Thatâs what Paul was talking about in Philippians 3:14 when he said: âI press on toward the goal for the prize of the high call of God in Christ Jesus.â Are you âpressingâ today? Are you staying teachable â staying a disciplined follower? You know thatâs what Jesus called us to be right? Disciples. Students of the Spirit. Always pressing, never plateauing. And hereâs what I love â Improvisation is not reacting out of panic. Itâs responding out of preparation. Miles could flip that chord because he had mastered the scale. He could move with grace under pressure because he had practiced for years in private.Thatâs the secret of staying ready. When the unexpected hits â your preparation kicks in. When others freeze â you flow. When the wrong note comes â you compose a new melody.đ€ Donât Forget ThisâYou donât have to chase the king-sized opportunity â when you stay ready, the opportunity recognizes you.âPrayerLord, keep me sharp, steady, and ready for divine moments.Todayâs ChallengePick one skill youâve been neglecting â something that used to make you come alive â and practice it for 8 minutes today. No applause. No pressure. No pretending. Just preparation.Because when your king-sized opportunity calls⊠you wonât have to get ready â youâll already be ready.About the AuthorFred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer.
