This book presents an adapted Japanese folktale about the legendary 16th-century master swordsman Tsukahara Bokuden. While traveling in disguise on a ferry, Bokuden encounters an arrogant warrior who intimidates the other passengers with threats of violence. Rather than relying on physical force, Bokuden uses his intelligence and wit to neutralize the threat through a philosophy he calls "sword fighting without swords." An included historical afterword explains that the real Bokuden was a celebrated "sword saint" whose life inspired stories meant to teach lessons on grace and humility. Ultimately, the narrative demonstrates how a true hero overcomes conflict by being cleverer rather than more aggressive than their opponent.
