I hope you’ve had a great week, we’ve had some strange weather again, a cold start to the week with Snow last sunday and subzero temperatures followed by a week of mild weather and rain. I won’t claim to understand it, but it’s strange is all I know.
This week has seen a couple of news stories regarding our favourite town.
Tiddlywinks Ramsbottom has recently been caught up in a case of mistaken identify when a toddler went missing from a nursery which simply had the same name. Tiddlywinks posted this message on their Facebook page:
Tiddlywinks Nursery School in Ramsbottom is not apart of a chain and has nothing to do with the nursery stated in the article. Tiddlywinks Ramsbottom being a family run business having the one only. Ofsted Outstanding in all areas.
It’s often easy for someone to get confused online, despite the wealth of knowledge, multiple search engines and often common sense available, people sometimes just don’t use any of them and comment without thinking. I hope Tiddlywinks come away without their amazing reputation tarnished.
Government cuts to essential services have meant that the local Ramsbottom Police station has been sat as just a drop in place for any of the remaining Police in the area. Greater Manchester Police have sent an internal message to staff informing them of the imminent sale of the station asking them to essentially clear their desks.
Ramsbottom Station along with seven other Police Stations will be sold at auction at the end of January, however as of the 21st of January, there had still not been any formal announcement or information generated for this auction. Cutting it a little fine here to get it sold.
The Bolton News article calculates that with the other Police Stations, they expect an average of around £116k each. Personally, I cannot see the Police Station going for anything less than £400k based on its location and size.
Planning permission in Ramsbottom can however be tricky due to the conservation area that is in place, but I’m sure whoever ends up buying the Police Station would be well aware of this and have planned ahead.
Ramsbottom had another victory in the long running AD Plant saga. After over two years of battling, it is finally over and Marshalls and Peel Environmental have decided not to continue with their appeal to be able to build their anaerobic digestion plant in Ramsbottom. A location which many believed would have not only produced unwelcome smells but potentially dangerous gases that would have poured into Ramsbottom.
Councillor Ian Bevan was quoted:
I am extremely pleased that this industrial plant will not be built at Fletcher Bank.
It is only a shame that Peel and Marshalls did not listen to us in the early stages of this planning application, and forced residents to go through two years of emotional stress of fighting this proposed waste plant.
Once again I want to thank everyone who put up a poster, signed petitions and campaigned against the AD Plant. It was simple the right idea, in totally the wrong place.
I don’t often review places in Ramsbottom, because to be honest, they’re all so good that you’re generally going to be doing well wherever you go, however today I’m making an exception.
When me and my family first moved to Ramsbottom, my wife was really keen to go to The Hungry Duck, which we did, and I thought it was OK, it wasn’t great, it wasn’t bad, it was just OK. Since then, we hadn’t been back, simply because as I say, there are so many good place in Ramsbottom, it’s daft to go somewhere you only had an OK experience in.
Fast forward to around about September/October last year when The Hungry Duck was taken over by Joe and his partner. I’d noticed this mainly via Twitter and I should have put two and two together because The Art Gallery closed, which I believe was owned by the husband of the previous Hungry Duck owner, or something like that. That’s why it featured a lot of the same artwork on the walls.
Anyway, I digress, so since the old owners left and Joe has taken over, I had been meaning to go in for a long time, either not finding the time or when I did they were having a refit. I finally found time this weekend. Yesterday, January 23rd me, my wife and son all went to The Hungry Duck to give it a shot. I was a little nervous as although I had heard from one other person that it was good, I’d kind of overhyped it to my wife. Well, if I don’t we don’t get to go where I want to go.
Well, what can I say, service was fantastic and fast, and the food was amazing. It cost us about £23ish for the three of us, which I think is reasonable and certainly in the price range of other places in Ramsbottom.
Without a doubt though, The Hungry Duck has just taken the crown for the best Eggs Benedict n Ramsbottom from The Lounge, which I didn’t think could be topped, but this was perfect. The muffin was perfectly toasted and soft, the poached eggs flawless, bacon and sauce just delicious.
Oh, and they’re also going to be opening for evenings in February, and if you need to brush up on your cooking, they also do cookery classes which also features wine from The Vineyard.
Joe is doing it right, he knows the area and knows what works, do me a favour, give it a try if you’ve not been in since the change of ownership, I was really impressed.
