Welcome to the latest episode of This is Rammy where today (27th of September), Kay Brow is closing for 5 days. I suspect this is going to cause some serious problems with traffic in Ramsbottom and as a result, I am going to be the first to dub event this Browmaggedon!
The reason for this road closure is that a wall is being demolished and rebuilt, I’m not sure which wall this is specifically, maybe you know?
All the signs on Kay Brow say that it will be closed for 5 days, however I learnt from this week’s copy of Bury Times they reported that the work is going on for 6 weeks! Yes SIX WEEKS!
They do also mention that the road will become a one way system from Square Street to Bolton Street, so essentially the whole hill part of Kay Brow.
I wrote to the council to ask for specifics on the closing of Kay Brow, and this was their response:
Dear Sir,Kay Brow is due to be closed for 5 days to allow the demolition of a tall wall adjacent to the highway. The closure is required for safety reasons. It is anticipated that after these 5 days, works should have sufficiently progressed to allow the road to be opened again under temporary traffic signal control.

Do you think that Bridge Street is a danger to pedestrians? Katalin Koncsag certainly thinks that it is, and has gone so far as to create a petition asking for the council to install a zebra crossing on Bridge Street.

As of today there are 100 supporters of this campaign, if you feel that Bridge Street would benefit from a zebra crossing then click the link above and sign the petition. This will at least get the council to take a look at where the best place for a Zebra crossing would be, or maybe another type of crossing would be better?
So far, this podcast episode has taken on a theme, mainly roads and traffic related. Do you know where the crossings got their names from? You might have heard of various animals when it comes to crossings, such as Zebras and Pelicans, but did you know there are also Puffin, Toucan and Pegasus Crossings?
Here are the reasons behind the names for the crossings (as found online, so take it with a pinch of salt, heck you’re reading this online):
Zebra Crossings so named because of the colours of the stripes used. These can be seen in many parts of the world. One very famous Zebra Crossing is in Liverpool, namely the crossing on Abbey Road.
Pelican Crossing: The word Pelican actually comes from Pedestrian Light Control) (You ‘control’ the button for the ‘green man’ at the other side of the road)
Puffin Crossing: The word puffin actually comes from Pedestrian User Friendly Intelligence. (It’s so ‘friendly’ that the buttons are right beside you!)
Toucan Crossing: The word Toucan is quite literally based on the idea that two can cross – because these are joint pedestrian and cycle crossings.
Pegasus Crossing: A pegasus crossing is an equestrian crossing, hence the horse based name. They look a lot like pedestrian crossings with buttons, however instead of a red and green person, they are red and green horses with riders.

Friday October 2nd: Ramsbottom Dundee United Reformed Church on Dundee Lane will be holding a Macmillan coffee morning raising funds for the charity, this starts at 10am continuing until 12. Entry to the event is £2 and you get a coffee and biscuit with that.
Sunday October 4th: Ramsbottom Vintage market will return to Ramsbottom Civic Hall on October the 4th running from 10am until 3pm.
