This is Rammy caught up with Melanie Southworth on Saturday May the 2nd 2015, one week after the massive earthquake in Nepal claiming the lives of over 7000 people.
As most people will know, I interviewed Mel Southworth before she headed to Everest to embark on her climb, little did we know that when we agreed to speak to each other again, it would be under these sad circumstances.
Melanie has done as much as could be expected from anyone, but she still wishes she could do more, in a recent SMS conversation between me and her, Melanie stated:
I’ll be back in Kathmandu Wednesday… before booking flight home. I’m going to leave a donation here for village called Thame that has been flattened. My friend in KTM who works for Swiss Aid says theres nothing I can do in KTM. I’m frightened of coming home because then I feel I can’t contribute & it bothers me tremendously.
Despite the fact that Mel has been in this disaster, she still feels that she has to help and without being there is unable to help. I’ve explained that this isn’t the fact, and getting her home and safe has to be her priority for now. As her friend has mentioned, there is nothing more she can do there, it’s time for her to come home.
