If there was ever a subject which will get people heated up, it’s parking in Ramsbottom and this week Bury Council have proposed that a new “no loading at any time” I believe that’s double yellows but feel free to correct me, is to be introduced on Ramsbottom Lane.
This was reported this week in The Bury Times who reports that the scheme is expected to come into force sometime in summer 2019.
The location in Ramsbottom which is earmarked for this change is arguably a stupid place to park. The road is extremely busy at times and narrows in places causing problems regardless of parked cars. There are already some parking restrictions in place on Ramsbottom Lane, this would be an extension of those.
The problem I have with this is that the parking, although badly placed, is at least parking which Ramsbottom is badly in need of. If you were to travel to any other town in the local vicinity I’d argue that you’ll find a parking space much easier than in Ramsbottom. With the cameras on the supermarket parking and schemes such as this taking any road parking away, where are visitors to the town supposed to park? Once again, surely it’s time to pressure the owners of the old Mondi Paper Mill site to put it to good use and create some additional parking. Even if it was temporary.
Last episode I mentioned how we’d not yet put our tree up in our house, well that’s all changed this weekend as it did finally go up. It’s only an artificial one, but it’s not too shabby. We have had real before but with a one year old crawling around putting all sorts from the floor in her mouth I didn’t want to add pine needles to her diet by accident. Not that you’d ever do that on purpose?
However, I was driving down the previously mentioned Ramsbottom Lane when I noticed this fantastic arrangement of Christmas lights and had to pull over to take a photo. If this is your house, or collection of houses, well done, very well done.
I also visited the St Andrews PTFA Christmas Fair and it was heaving. Thanks to everyone that came down and got involved. With the fantastic array of prizes for the raffle along with a great variety of volunteers running stalls with games and things to buy, the school managed to raise just short of £4000 which will go a long way for 2019. The money raised previously has already been spent on revamping the paintings in the playground.
In addition to putting up the Christmas tree in our house, I finally got around to watching A Monster Calls, you might remember them filming in Ramsbottom back in, actually, let’s make that this weeks:
The question is: “When did Hollywood come to Ramsbottom to film our town for the film A Monster Calls?” I’m looking for month and year. The answer will be a little later on in the podcast episode.

Some good news for Ramsbottom and the local environment this week too. Keith Burroughs of the Ramsbottom Heritage Society announced on Facebook that the area of Ramsbottom known as Church Fields has been granted a Tree Preservation Order. This was obtained by Ramsbottom Heritage who had been trying to protect the land since 2014.
The land which is owned by Peel Holdings was considered potentially at risk of development. Let’s face it, there’s plenty of development going on in Ramsbottom currently in areas that don’t need it, and not enough in areas that do *cough* Mondi Paper Mill Site.
Keith went on to state that this particular level of protection is “very difficult to overturn in any planning application”. He also states that it was one of the Heritage Society Members that came up with the idea of suggesting the whole of Church Fields to be a natural extension of Crow Lumb Wood, and wrote the application themselves. So thank you very much to that individual and anyone who has the wider communities interests at heart.

14:25 – Ramsbottom United News: ⚽Ramsbottom this week headed 50 miles down to Kidsgrove Athletic, which is just north of Stoke-on-trent. Just over an hours drive for the team, depending on who’s driving. We had a great result away too with a 2-0 win over Kidsgrove Athletic.
This was a league match which has now put us into 7th place in the league.
