Blackout causes outbreak of candles in Ramsbottom – 0:36

Welcome to This is Rammy, the podcast about Ramsbottom and the surrounding area where the power has returned! No, not me, the power to Ramsbottom. If you’re a resident of the local area you’ll no doubt be aware that Ramsbottom suffered a large power cut on Thursday the 19th of January due to a high voltage fault at an electricity substation near to Ramsbottom Train Station.

Eyewitnesses, (or maybe that should be earwitnesses) reported hearing a loud bang before being plunged into darkness. Fear and panic quickly spread around the town with reports of some people buying up all of the packets of Haribo from ALDI and some reports from unknown sources of people turning to cannibalism. Not really, just checking you were paying attention.

Local fire crews were on hand to divert traffic from Bridge Street causing large tailbacks and diversions around the area. My sons nursery was forced to evacuate for safety reasons leaving staff and children in the cold singing songs by torchlight to keep their spirits up until parents arrived.

The power was off from approximately twenty past four in the afternoon until six forty five. Rush hour, not the best time for it to happen, but when is there a good time for an emergency such as this?

Local establishments such as Irwell Works were forced to breakout the candles, luckily for them they are a regular addition to the ambiance of a night in The Brewery, so they were on hand.

The Blackout wasn’t the only thing in the news this week, it’s been pretty busy from a news perspective.

Woodhey High School comes 4th in Bury GCSE Tables 2016 – 02:43

First up, it’s a massive congratulations to local high school Woodhey who came 4th in the whole of Bury in the GCSE league tables with around 68% of pupils receiving GCSE’s within the highly prized A* to C bracket. In this day and age when it’s getting more and more difficult to pass the GCSE’s that’s a fantastic result so well done there.

Grants Tower could become an attraction once more. – 03:40

Also in the news this week, local landowner Gary Buckley has put forward a request for planning permission to partly restore Grants Tower. Grants Tower originally stood overlooking Ramsbottom on the opposite side of the Valley to Peel Tower; built in 1828 to commemorate Mill Owners the Grants Brothers; William and Daniel who were instrumental in building much of Ramsbottom.

Here’s a video of Grants Tower as it was in May 2016:

Ramsbottom United BadgeRamsbottom United News: – 05:47

So far it’s been a great year for Ramsbottom United, with two draws and two wins. Our last match was away to Colwyn Bay in which we came away the victors with a last minute injury time goal by Josh Askew. It was actually Joshs last match for us too, so this was a particularly special moment. Josh was on loan from Blackburn Rovers.

Ramsbottom United now sit in 10th position in the table with 37 points. Our next match is at home on Tuesday the 24th of January against 16th placed Hyde United, kick off is at 19:45. We last faced Hyde United back in 2015 in which we lost 4-1 and 5-0. Let’s sort that goal difference out and send them packing.

The upcoming Saturday home match after Hyde is Saturday the 28th of January against 9th placed Colne. Colne are due to play 1st placed Lancaster City when we take on Hyde United, hopefully a loss for them will mean we’re in a good position to jump ahead provided we win.
