It’s 2016! We don’t have flying cars yet, but we have hoverboards that are being banned left right and centre in America, including a raid on at a recent electronics show CES.

I don’t think they’ll be “taking off” in Ramsbottom anytime soon though.

This week I interviewed Stephen Gill of Summerseat players and I looked at how Summerseat Players actually came to be in Ramsbottom.

In 1990 what was then the “Buskers Showbar and Snooker Hall” (formerly “The Royal Cinema”) was purchased by the Summerseat Players. It was renamed to what is now, the Theatre Royal. It then underwent lots of changes to create the theatre and in September 1991 it opened to the public with their production of “Stepping Out”.

Interestingly, Stephen mentioned that they had also looked at the old Co-Op Building at the time, but access was considered too difficult and costly to correct. I spoke to Stephen Marley about the old Co-Op building in episode 41.

I also found out how many people it takes to actually put on a production.

Amazingly, it takes around 95 people NOT including the actors to put on a production, if you want to help but didn’t want to be on stage, you could be one of those 95 people.

Everything from audio technicians, lighting technicians and even bar staff all help to put on the shows at the Theatre Royal.

Stephen has been with Summerseat Players for around four years. His involvement includes directing, publicity, social media and he even creates the posters like the one here for 39 Steps. He does still act from time to time too.

This month the production is of 39 Steps, the film/play/book which features the Flying Scotsman catapulting it to notoriety, it coincides well with the recent renovation of the steam train.
