Ramsbottom Crest

It feels like it’s been so long since the last episode, mainly because I’ve been on holiday and between the last recording and this one, a few things have gone on in local news, a few events have been announced and a couple of the hundreds of potholes have been filled in.

One of the things I did this weekend with the family was take a trip down, what I believe is called Train Tracks Footpath or something along those lines, basically the public footpath that goes from the Nuttall Road Estates towards Summerseat. Then we stopped at Summerseat Park where my son had a go on various different park equipment and by pure coincidence bumped into one of his friends from nursery and got chatting to his parents David and Helen, which was a lovely surprise. We’d never met before, but we knew the boys must have known each other as they were calling out each other’s names as they ran around.

Me and my family had a little shock this week, as you know we’ve been on holiday in Tenerife for the past week, so we were a little surprised to go from mid twenties temperatures to snow and hail, but then I guess that’s what we’re used to in Rammy, and why we’re all made of solid stuff.

Did you manage to catch last week’s episode where I interviewed Clint from The House of Beer, absolutely lovely guy, if you’ve not had a chance to hear it yet, catch it here.

Also, did you guess this week’s What is it Wednesday correctly? This week it wasn’t just the place, there was also a little bit of history behind it. Thanks to Anne for providing me the tip off a few months back. The first clue was of the World War 2 air raid siren which still sits on top of Ramsbottom Chambers, which is part of the Ramsbottom Civic Hall buildings. Next time you’re out and about, take a look, here it is from last Wednesday’s clue:

Ramsbottom News:

Let’s start with some great work arranged by the Ramsbottom Heritage Society. This month they have had the Ramsbottom Urban District Council (RUDC) crest repainted to bring out it’s vibrant colours once more. This crest adorns a big old rock next to the Tilted Vase sculpture on Market Place, it features two machines prominently on it’s front, one a cotton printing machine, the other a spinning machine which represents the close ties to our textile heritage in Ramsbottom. Something I talked about in this episode in reference to the old Paper Mill Chimney.

Next time you’re out and about, or at the Artisan Markets (the next one being May 8th) have a look to see if you can see it.

In addition, our very own Irwell Works has been listed in top 30 pubs in best of Britain in The Telegraph, one of only three in the North West in their list. Speaking of pubs, The Major now has new owners, I don’t know much about that other then I saw a notice mentioning that they wouldn’t be serving food for a while due to change of ownership, I believe they are back serving food now though.

Councilor Ian Bevan announced on his Twitter page that Bury Council have finally filled in the pot hole at Ramsbottom Station, this particular pothole had some significance for me too as my wife actually got a flat tyre on it a few weeks back, and not only that there was that terrible news in the week about the local resident who died as a result of a head injury when his bike hit a pot hole. When will the council pull their finger out and get around to sorting all these things that need maintenance. God helps us if we get a bad batch of snow again.

Ramsbottom United:

After another two successive losses, it was confirmed that Ramsbottom United have been relegated out of the Evo Stik League. Damn it.
