The number of people in the United States who are "food insecure" has risen sharply in the past few decades, with 48 million Americans going hungry as of 2012. One in six Americans say that at some in the year, they run out of food. For the world's richest country, these are staggering numbers.

Journalist and author Tracie McMillan traveled the country to better understand how it is that so many Americans are going hungry. She followed low-income families to see how they get by and how they make decisions about what to eat and feed their kids. She reported her findings in an article for National Geographic.

McMillan is an independent journalist covering hunger for National Geographic and author of "The American Way of Eating." She spoke with Mary Harris from WNYC's Health Desk about the state of food insecurity in America.
