Esther Dyson, a New York-based tech investor, questioned why healthcare is so expensive in the United States. To create a solution, she developed the "Way to Wellville" contest, which has small American towns compete to develop health and wellness road maps for their communities

In 2015, following a competitive application process, Muskegon County, Michigan was designated a "Way to Wellville" community. Muskegon had begun the process of getting healthier on their own with "1 in 21," the Healthy Muskegon County initiative launched by the Muskegon Rotary Club four years ago. It has been working to build a culture of health in the community, and now they are finally starting to see results.

Dyson and Jamie Hekker, the community engagement coordinator for public health in Muskegon County, reflect on Muskegon's fight to become a healthier community.
