The other side, United States Navy were commanded by Pacific Fleet and Commander in Chief Chester W. The Japanese operation was motivated to push the United States away from the Pacific in order to pursue Japan’s Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere freely. Also, this endeavor, became compelling after Doolittle Raid, whose mission was to bomb Japanese capital city Tokyo as retaliation for the attack on Pearl Harbor. Although the raid caused negligible damage to Japan, it had major psychological effects. The consequent national outcry and the overconfidence of the Japanese military pushed Marshal Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto’s plan further to attack Midway Island in the Central Pacific. Isoroku Yamamoto, although being aware of United States' massive industrial and training capabilities during his US study, chose to go ahead which turned out to be a catastrophic defeat, which ultimately, triggered the collapse of the Imperial Japan.
This battle, widely considered a turning point in the Pacific War, was aided by the cryptographic success by US navy who was able to plan prior to the attack by getting its date and location.
