IBM introduced the first Personal Computer known as the IBM PC or the IBM 5150 on August 12, 1981.
The giant entered the market following the growing popularity of computers from its competitor, namely Macintosh from Apple. IBM dominated the market quickly, at least for a while.
The PC was so popular that even rival Apple needed to make their computers look like IBM’s. IBM’s open architecture to use off-the-shelf parts for its hardware allowed quick copycat, and the choice of Microsoft’s DOS as its operating system gave Microsoft control of the OS market, both served to its downfall. This was an apparent but a smart business mistake that would change the life for decades to come.
