China's factory activity unexpectedly shrank in September as high raw material prices and power cuts continued to pressure manufacturers in the country.
The purchasing managers' index (PMI) for manufacturing sector came in at 49.6, edging down from 50.1 in August, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed Thursday, slipping into contraction for the first time since February 2020.
Sub-index shows that both the production and demand are cooling. The Chinese economy recovered rapidly from a pandemic-induced slump last year but has since lost steam, with the sprawling manufacturing sector hit by COVID-19 outbreaks, higher costs, production bottlenecks, and more recently, power rationing.
New export orders slipped faster into contraction, the data showed, hitting the lowest level since February, as overseas demand cooled. Factories continued to lay off workers and at a quicker pace.
But there’s still a sliver-lining. The PMI for non-manufacturing sector came in at 53.2 in September, much improved from 47.5 last month. The figure was above expectations, as activity in transportation, accommodation, catering and environmental control sectors have all recovered from an impact by the pandemic in August.

中国物流与采购联合会、国家统计局服务业调查中心今天发布的9月份中国制造业采购经理指数（PMI）为49.6%，较上月下降0.5个百分点，在连续18个月运行在扩张区间后，落入50%以下，表明制造业增速有所回调。
分项指数变化显示，供需两端放缓。9月份市场需求偏弱运行、能耗双控政策以及大宗商品价格高位上涨等因素导致企业生产活动放缓。新订单指数为49.3%，比上月下降0.3个百分点，连续两个月位于收缩区间，反映制造业生产活动和市场需求总体放缓。
而非制造业商务活动指数和综合PMI产出指数则回升至扩张区间，9月份指数为53.2%，高于上月5.7个百分点，显示非制造业景气水平快速回升，主要受服务业恢复明显和建筑业增长较快拉动。

Hong Kong’s Legislative Council passed the bills yesterday for establishing new fund re-domiciliation mechanisms, which allow private investment funds to be established in Hong Kong in the form of limited partnership funds (LPFs).
香港特区立法会9月30日通过《2021年证券及期货（修订）条例草案》及《2021年有限合伙基金及商业登记法例（修订）条例草案》。修订条例建立了新的基金迁册机制，现有在外地以公司或有限责任合伙形式成立的投资基金迁移注册及营运地点到香港时，可分别注册为开放式基金型公司或有限合伙基金。

China’s CATL, the world’s largest maker of electric-vehicle batteries, agreed to acquire Canada’s Millennial Lithium Corp. for C$297.3 million, outbidding rival Ganfeng Lithium in the latest foray to expand access to a key battery-making mineral.

China Evergrande Group will repay debts owed to Northeast China’s Shengjing Bank by selling a stake in the bank worth about 10 billion yuan, according to its Wednesday filing to the Hong Kong bourse. Evergrande’s share price closed up 15 percent yesterday, ending a six-month losing streak that has seen the stock losing 80 percent of its value. Today, Evergrande closed down 4 percent.
中国恒大周三在港交所公告，全资子公司向沈阳盛京金控投资集团有限公司出售盛京银行17.5亿股的非流通内资股，合计人民币99.93亿元。盛京银行要求，出售事项全部所得款项需用作偿还本集团对盛京银行的相关债务。昨日，恒大股价上涨14.98%，结束了持续6个月的跌势。今天，恒大回吐，跌3.91%。
The World Bank has adjusted its projection for China's GDP growth to 8.5 percent in 2021, 0.4 percent up from its forecast in April. Meanwhile, most economies in East Asia and the Pacific region may face slower growth of 2.5 percent with a decline of employment rates.

Chinese stocks closed higher today before a 7-day national break without tradings on the mainland market. The Shanghai Composite Index closed 0.9 percent higher at 3568 points. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.63 percent up at 14309 points. However, the Hang Seng Index closed 0.36 percent lower at 24575 points.
