The Chinese yuan is likely to hold its strength as a safe haven for global investors seeking shelter against geopolitical conflicts, leaving more policy space for China's central bank to support the economy.
Last Thursday, the onshore yuan hit 6.3095 against the US dollar, while offshore yuan hit 6.3016, both the strongest level in almost four years. Today, the central parity rate of the Chinese currency strengthened 124 pips to 6.3222 against the U.S. dollar, a record high since April 2018.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict has become the latest wild card for the investors who are already concerned with global supply chain disruptions, the 7.5 percent inflation rate in the US and the still-raging coronavirus pandemic in the world.
The Chinese yuan is expected to stay appealing even amid the looming interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve, thanks to China's stable economic fundamentals, resilient export growth, and the prospect of attractive returns on Chinese financial assets, experts said.
Statistics point to the fact that overseas investors have continued to buy into Chinese assets in January. Overseas holdings of China's interbank bonds were up 17 percent year-on-year to reach 4.07 trillion yuan at the end of January, according to China's central bank data. At the same time, investors are buying into Chinese stocks through the Hong Kong-Shanghai and Hong Kong-Shenzhen Connect arrangements.
Additionally, China's Ministry of Commerce announced in January that the country saw overall foreign direct investment inflows spike more than 20 percent last year to reach $173.5 billion. Also, China is expected to witness another year of vigorous exports. All of the factors above are to bolster a stronger yuan.
人民币汇率迭创新高，中国资产“避风港”特征凸显。
2月28日，人民币对美元汇率中间价报6.3222元，与前中间价相比，调升124个基点，创出2018年4月26日以来新高。上周四离岸、在岸人民币对美元汇率双双再创新高，刷新近4年高位。
人民币为何持续走强？业内人士认为，这源于国内经济基本面、贸易竞争力走强，以及国际资本对人民币认可度持续提升，进而带来境外资金对中国资产的持续买入。
近期全球金融市场不确定性弥漫，地缘政治局势紧张，主要发达经济体货币政策正常化预期渐起。业内人士表示，虽然中美利差显著收窄，本应令人民币承压，但当前外汇市场受避险情绪主导，人民币资产“避风港”属性突出，支持人民币保持强势。
人民币资产方面，中国人民银行上海总部最新公布的数据显示，截至2022年1月末，1021家境外法人机构合计持有银行间市场债券4.07万亿元，同比增长17%。
外国投资方面，商务部数据显示，中国2021年实际利用外资规模达到1735亿美元，同比增长20%，处于历史高位，这体现了中国良好经济发展前景对境外长期资本的吸引力。
贸易方面，根据国家外汇管理局最新数据，近几个月中国进出口顺差增加。业内人士认为，贸易竞争力走强，也使得人民币汇率创下新高。
Enterprises in major grain producing areas of China had purchased a total of 152.35 million tons of autumn grain, including rice, soybean and corn, up 17.1 million tons from 2021, said the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration on Friday. The supply of food in the Chinese market is guaranteed, a spokesperson with the administration said.
秋粮收购超3000亿斤：国家粮食和物资储备局2月25日宣布，全国粮食主产区累计收购秋粮3047亿斤，同比增加342亿斤，收购进度快于往年。国家粮食和物资储备局新闻发言人秦玉云表示，总体来看，当前国内粮食市场供应充足、运行平稳，各项政策措施有力有效，维护粮食市场平稳运行有诸多有利条件。
China's GDP topped 114.37 trillion yuan in 2021, with GDP per capita reaching 80976 yuan, exceeding the world’s average, a report published by the NBS showed on Monday.
去年我国人均GDP破8万元：2月28日，《中华人民共和国2021年国民经济和社会发展统计公报》出炉。2021年，我国全年国内生产总值1143670亿元，比上年增长8.1%，两年平均增长5.1%。全年人均国内生产总值80976元，比上年增长8.0%。国家统计局副局长盛来运在解读统计公报时指出，2021年我国人均GDP达到80976元，按年平均汇率折算达12551美元，超过世界人均GDP水平。

China saw the number of investors in its securities market exceed 200 million as of Feb. 25, according to the China Securities Depository and Clearing Co. The number of investors has doubled since topping 100 million for the first time in 2016.

Chinese stocks closed higher Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite and the Shenzhen Component both up 0.32 percent. Stocks related to oil and gas exploitation and digital currencies led the gains, while those related to real estate and education led the losses. The Hang Seng Index, however, ended 0.24 percent lower, dragged by real estate stocks.
