Wall Street stocks fell yes­ter­day, dragged down by a weak tech sec­tor after upbeat ** eco­nomic data sparked gains for European and Asian mar­kets.

Wall Street’s bench­mark S&P 500 fell 0.8 per cent by mid­day in New York and the tech-focused Nas­daq Com­pos­ite declined 1.2 per cent, although both indices were on track to close the week with gains.

Shares of US chip equip­ment makers Applied Mater­i­als and Lam Research retreated while the Phil­adelphia Semi­con­ductor index — track­ing 30 of the world’s biggest semi­con­ductor man­u­fac­tur­ers — fell 2.3 per cent.

But chip designer Arm held on to its gains yes­ter­day after it made the largest ini­tial pub­lic offer­ing on Wall Street in nearly two years on Thursday — with the day-one share boost push­ing its mar­ket cap­it­al­isa­tion to more than $65bn.
