The US Sen­ate has approved a $9bn pack­age of spend­ing cuts that will hit pub­lic broad­cast­ing and over­seas aid and gives a legis­lat­ive vic­tory to US Pres­id­ent Don­ald Trump.

Broad­cast­ing insti­tu­tions NPR and PBS would lose fed­eral fund­ing if the pack­age, which the Repub­lican-led Sen­ate approved by 51 votes to 48 early yes­ter­day morn­ing, is signed into law.

The bill would also shut off fund­ing for for­eign aid grants for the US Agency for Inter­na­tional Devel­op­ment.

The meas­ure still needs final approval by the House of Rep­res­ent­at­ives, which was due to vote on it yes­ter­day. The bill must pass by a dead­line of today.

The “res­cis­sions” pack­age rep­res­ents a small frac­tion of the pur­por­ted $190bn in sav­ings iden­ti­fied by the socalled Depart­ment of Gov­ern­ment Effi­ciency, the ini­ti­at­ive spear­headed by Elon Musk. But pro­gress on the legis­la­tion would be a sign that the push to cut gov­ern­ment expendit­ure is set to out­last Musk’s pub­lic fal­lout with Trump.

While NPR and PBS have long been cri­ti­cised by right-lean­ing politi­cians in the US for alleged lib­eral bias, sev­eral Repub­lic­ans in Con­gress have expressed con­cern about the impact of budget cuts on news ser­vices.
