93 Sea Trout
At this time of year sea trout are making their annual journey back to the rivers where they were born. They have left their feeding grounds out to sea and returned to deep pools inland. Here, they patiently wait until the water-level rises. When it gets high enough, they swim against the river current to reach their spawning grounds. Female fish lay their eggs in gravel nests known as redds. As a female releases her eggs, an adult male fertilises them. The female then covers the fertilised eggs with gravel. The young trout emerge from the riverbed between March and May of the following year.
