Passage: Genesis 28:10-22

-------------------

Jacob's story in Genesis 28 demonstrates how God meets us in unexpected places and circumstances. After manipulating his way through life, Jacob found himself fleeing from his brother Esau, alone and afraid in the wilderness. It was precisely in this moment of vulnerability—when all his control mechanisms had failed—that God revealed Himself through a dream of a ladder with angels ascending and descending between heaven and earth. This encounter transformed Jacob's understanding of God from a distant deity to a personal presence. The story challenges our assumptions about where God works, reminding us that He often appears in ordinary places, during family crises, in loneliness, and amid the consequences of our own poor decisions. Jesus later identified Himself as the fulfillment of Jacob's ladder in John 1, showing that He is God's ultimate connection between heaven and earth. Rather than us climbing up to God, Jesus descended to us, bridging the gap and making any place in our lives a potential portal for divine encounter.
