文社 Humanities & Social Sciences我为什么对“真相”感到悲观？这是一个真相稀缺的时代，因为有人在系统性地进行误导，而且信息泛滥、算法逞凶。为了获得真相，我们需要学会偏听则暗、兼听则明。但光技巧是不够的，我们还要克服内心的恐惧，因为真相并不令人愉悦。在这个泥沙俱下、鱼龙混杂的时代，我对普通人获得真相的能力感到悲观。因为强大的机构在操纵真相，群众也因狂热盲从而拒绝真相。中国有悠久的谋略文化，其核心是欺骗，这使得我们的文化并不对真相友好。但真相是如此重要，因为无真相便无真理，无正确的思想和决策。为了获得真相，除了个人的努力，还需要系统性的机制设计，而斗争是获得真相的有力武器。如果有人要掩藏和误导真相，那就要用斗争来逼出真相。这是在《后真相时代》读书会上的发言，与诸君商榷。 This is a public episode. 文社 Humanities & Social Sciences单亲妈妈中年到英国留学，三年拿到博士学位，她是怎么做到的？引言微信公众号《周卫芳》（微信号：weifangarticles）创办者Grace女士是位单亲妈妈，尽管人过中年，她却决定到英国留学。在格拉斯哥大学，她连续读了硕士和博士，并且在三年之内完成了博士研究，拿到了博士学位。那么，她是如何做到这一切的？2022年12月17日，文社采访了她，以下是文字实录。我们的《文科博士访谈记》节目继续招募受访者，如果您是人文社科领域的博士（生），有兴趣接受访谈，请与我们联系（微信号：ChaotingCheng）。说出您的精彩故事和深刻洞见，去影响更多人！文社：非常感谢您今天抽出宝贵的时间接受我的访谈，能否简单介绍一下您自己？Grace：我叫格瑞斯，我在英国格拉斯哥大学做中国移民研究，尤其关注中国近二十年移民到西方国家的富裕群体，因为我想知道这些人为什么在富裕以后要移民西方国家。文社：我知道现在您已经顺利完成了博士学业，恭喜您。我想问的第一个问题是，您如何能够在三年内完成博士研究？Grace：我之所以能够在三年内完成我的博士研究，首先得益于我硕士和博士都是在格拉斯哥大学读的，中间的衔接比较紧密。我在写硕士大论文的时候，就已经开始了博士研究。在硕士学习的最后半年，我就开始了做博士研究的literature review（文献回顾），而很多博士生第一年其实就是做literature review，这一点帮助了我。第二，在博士学习过程中，跟导师相处是一门技术，很多博士生可能在第一年要花很多时间学会跟导师相处。而我的博士导师就是我的硕导，所以在硕士阶段我们就很熟悉了，基本上我也了解他的工作和学术方式，这也帮我节省了时间。另外，我导师的指导也是非常清楚的，基本上每个月我要做什么事情，他的指引都很清楚，我不需要去想要做什么。我基本上没有走过弯路，按部就班地按照导师的计划去做。还有就是我的数据收集非常快，我觉得数据收集和数据分析，是博士研究的两个难点。我用了三个月完成数据收集，数据分析花了大概三到四个月，这两个过程非常顺利，这也导致了我的整个研究非常顺利，时间相对比较快。完成数据收集、数据分析后，我就开始写论文的结论和contribution。总的来说，我的博士学习比较顺利，在学术研究上，我没有遭遇太多的困难和障碍。文社：对，听起来确实是蛮顺利的。对于那些想要申请博士的在读硕士生或在读本科生，您有哪些建议呢？Grace：我的建议只适用于英国。因为博士第一年有一些必修课，所以如果你计划在英国读博，我的第一个建议是在同一所大学完成硕博学习。为什么？因为当你在读硕士的时候，就可以修博士的必修课。这样在博士第一年，你就可以专注于写literature review。我在读硕士的时候，就已经把博士第一年的必修课修完了。第二点，如果在同一所大学完成硕博学习，在硕士阶段就可以了解相关博导擅长的研究领域，同时了解他本人的工作方式和相处模式，因为博导和博士生之间的顺畅合作非常关键。如果可能，在硕士期间就应逐步了解这位博导，而且确保自己可以和对方融洽配合，而不是等到博士阶段再慢慢摸索。如果硕博不同校，你还得花时间去适应这个学校内部的规则，同时还得进一步了解这位博导。文社：对，像您说的，了解导师真的是非常重要。因为很多人是从国内直接申请，或者是从其他学校申请，就没有机会直接接触导师，更别说是了解对方的人品和工作方式了。虽然您硕博同校，不过我想读硕士跟读博士的心态还是不一样吧？Grace：区别很大。与读博士相比，硕士期间自主学习并不是太多，当然我们要写硕士大论文，但相对来说，很多时候是按照导师的要求去完成布置的任务，导师的参与比较多。但读博期间，更多是一个自主学习、自我研究的过程。当然你的博导会给一些建议，但是更多的时候需要自己安排时间，自己安排任务并完成，需要自己处理在整个研究过程中的各种突发性问题。一个简单的例子，在我读博第一年，因为疫情缘故，我们不能去学校了，要在家里学习。这跟在学校里学习是不一样的，你得学会自我调节，适应这种新的生活和学习研究的方式。所以读博更多是一个自我安排、自我管理、自我解决问题的过程。硕士期间，相对来说，跟着老师去做一些小任务，老师的参与比较多。但博士阶段主要靠自己完成所有事情，你像风筝一样在天上飞，老师手里有一根线，他会给你一些指导，但是所有任务都要靠你自己完成，因此自我管理、自我安排的能力必须很强。文社：对我来说，自我管理和时间管理真的很难，特别是在疫情期间。您的博士研究大部分都在疫情期间度过，请问您是如何做到自律的？如何自我管理时间？Grace：举个例子吧，在写literature review的时候，可能导师要求一个半月或者两个月完成。我的导师对于其他学生的要求是一个半月完成4000字，但对我的要求是1万字。大家都知道，一个半月写1万字很多，而且一个半月很快就会过去，所以我把大任务分解成小任务，1万字在45天完成，算出每天要写多少字。我每天给自己一个小任务，一天写300字，哪怕生病了，我都强制自己写300字。人是有惰性的，所以要抓住思维最活跃最高效的时间。比如，我早上的效率非常不高，我就起床很晚。但下午三、四点到晚上十点，这段时间是我的大脑比较productive的时候，所以我选择上午做家务，下午四点之后学习。一定要学会用效率最高的时间来学习和研究，把那些相对并不是太productive的时段用来做其他事情。另外一个问题就是，人不但有惰性，也会疲惫，这个时候不要逼着自己学习。我会选择出去走一走，或者看一些小的video，让自己放松一下，这样也有利于提高研究效率。文社：嗯，最重要的就是把大任务分解成小任务，然后一一完成，就很有成就感。但是，我觉得很难判断适合自己的工作方式。Grace：我认为一定要先了解自己，观察自己，不断地反思。如果最近这段时间你的效率真的非常低的话，你就要想一想，究竟为什么效率低？是因为突发性事件，还是因为自己懒惰，或者其他问题。找出原因之后，才能改善。当然，我的方式未必适合所有人，每个人的研究方法都不同，身体状态也不同。文社：下一个问题是非常本质性的问题，当时是为什么想要继续读博呢？Grace：其实刚开始也没有想读博。因为我刚开始申请的是德国法兰克福大学的硕士，有一个硕博连读的program，而且有奖学金。当时我是冲着奖学金去申请的，但是没有成功。后来，因为我挺喜欢英国的生活方式，就申请了格拉斯哥大学的两个硕士专业，很快都拿到offer。但当时我也没有打算来格拉斯哥，因为英国的学费太贵了。在申请法兰克福大学硕博连读那个项目时，需要提交proposal，我就写了一个。所以我在申请格拉斯哥大学的时候，也把这个proposal交上去了，我后来的二导认为这个proposal挺好。他对我说，你这个proposal不错，如果你读完博士，应该很容易在苏格兰找到工作。其实，我主要就是希望通过读博留在英国，我喜欢英国的生活方式。文社：您当初的目标达到了吗？您对于现状满意吗？Grace：其实刚开始我的目标非常不明确，校方说我这个proposal不错，就过来了。我以前是写文章的，我导师认为我挺适合做研究，我确实特别喜欢跟文字打交道。很多人会说，三年读完博士很难，但对我来说，并没有想象的那么难，因为我很享受研究这个过程。但我是自费生，确实有经济上的困难。读博的目标算是达到了，但现在就业挺难的。我现在才知道，一个博士文凭，并不能保证可以留在学术界。尤其是在当今英国学术圈，还是很内卷的。我现在还不确定自己是否可以在这个行业生存下去，虽然我比较享受教学和研究，但我不知道自己在这个行业的前景如何。文社：在读博期间或者说迄今为止，您的最大挑战是什么？Grace：对我来说，最大的挑战不是来自学术，首选是经济方面的挑战，其次是身体方面的挑战。我是自费生，虽然我也申请过奖学金，但没有成功。作为一个亚裔，与本地的欧洲学生竞争奖学金，尤其是社会科学方面的奖学金，我们其实处于不利的位置，所以经济上的压力非常大。另外一个挑战就是，我已人到中年，身体有些吃不消。读博的工作量很大，为了三年读完，我每周工作七天，每天十个小时左右。我每年休假很少，只有十五天左右，这三年都是如此。圣诞节我会给自己放两到三天假，暑假的时候会给自己一个星期去旅游。每天要坐在书桌前十个小时左右，运动少，压力大，所以经常生病，但生病的时候我也还得做研究。文社：我相信有很多人文社科的博士生们，有与您同样的烦恼，特别是经济方面。您是怎么调节这种压力呢？Grace：广泛的networking是我调节压力的重要方式。我认识了一些在学术上做得不错，同时人又很好的朋友，他们很愿意帮我。他们觉得我人到中年，还能这么专注地去做研究，挺欣赏我。我作为一个英国高校的亚裔博士生，也有被不公平对待的时候，也有委屈的时候，的确压力挺大的。当我有压力的时候，尤其是有时情绪崩溃的时候，我会找学术朋友倾诉，他们会倾听，并安慰我，给我提供一些建议。我很感谢他们，比如有一个英国的女学者，在这个行业已经待了很久，她知道这个行业很多内部的东西。她了解我，支持我，给了我很多建议和帮助。我觉得读博士的时候，你一定要有一个值得2022-12-2729 min

What is the role of Germany in this front?Wolfgang Ischinger: You want me to respond right away?Chaoting Cheng: Yes, please.Wolfgang Ischinger: Well, I know we need to be brief, your question actually deserves far more comprehensive reply. Obviously, American and European interests regarding China are not identical. America has military alliances with responsibilities in the Far East, we don’t. But we have strongly overlapping interests, we agreed today that China is a systemic rival or competitor, but we also agreed, when you read what Biden has said, that there are areas to cooperate with China. Hopefully, working out on functioning cooperation and coordination between Washington and the European Union is certainly in everybody’s interest, and I don’t think that China should think of this as an aggressive anti-Chinese approach. We have very similar interests in many many areas when you think of Cyber, when you think of level playing field in investment, when you think of unfair trade practices, when you think of human rights, yes, indeed, American and European interests are almost, if not totally, identical, when we talk about the Uyghurs, when we talk about Hong Kong, when we talk about other human rights issues. So, this is not anti-China, but is a recognition that there is a strategic interest on both sides of the Atlantic to coordinate as closely as we can, this is always not very easy on how best to deal with China and how to work with China wherever it is possible.
