Aus bislang ungeklärten Gründen geht diese anfängliche Kontrolle durch HIV-spezifische CD8+ T Zellen jedoch mit der Zeit verloren und es kommt zu einem Fortschreiten der HIV Infektion, die letztlich eine medikamentöse Therapie notwendig macht.
Eine chronische Immunaktivierung ist kennzeichnend für eine fortschreitende HIV Infektion.
