Nyt eventyr i Vestindien med Royal CopenhagenSteen Vedel blev selvstændig og fik sin egen agenturvirksomhed med produkter fra Den Kongelige Porcelænsfabrik i Vestindien. Det lykkedes med en flot butik på Madison Square Garden. 10 sælgere blev ansat til at besøge butikker overalt i Amerika. I 1972 kom de til Danmark til sælgermøde lige på det tidspunkt Kong Frederiks den 9. døde. Steen husker begravelsesoptoget, som amerikanerne syntes var helt unikt.Steen husker fra sin tid på fabrikken at han indgik en aftale om en parfume med navnet ”Royal Copenhagen”. Kongehuset havde grundlagt fabrikken i 1775, og de deltog også i festlighederne. Victor Borge underholdte og hele Det Kongelige Teater blev lejet til festlighederne, der blev forstyrret af en happening fra den røde fløj.2021-08-2909 min

Da Steen kom til, blev der produceret 20.000 forskellige dele på fabrikken, bl.a. det dyreste stel Flora Danica, og det blev Steens opgave at fjerne produkter. Han blev salgschef og det faldt ikke i god jord, at han lod produkter udgå. I 1972 gik han ind i politik, og blev valgt for de Konservative til Gentofte Kommunal bestyrelse.2021-08-2209 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling34. Den Kongelige Porcelænsfabrik 1I 1965 vender Steen med kone og to børn tilbage til Danmark og bosætter sig i Lyngby. Det første år som ansat på Den Kongelige Porcelænsfabrik satte han sig ind i stel og et utal af mærkelige figurer inden han blev direktionssekretær. I den stilling lavede han alt det de andre ikke gad lave, og han lærte fabrikken og produktionen at kende til mindste detalje. Da direktør Lindgren gik af i 1970 havde han udset sig Steen som sin afløser, men bestyrelsen ville det anderledes, og Steen blev forbigået.2021-08-1509 min

Møbelfirmaet Finmar samarbejdede med Arne Jacobsen, som bl.a. lige havde tegnet Ægget. Det blev til 5 år i London inden Steen blev headhuntet til en stilling på Den Kongelige Porcelænsfabrik i Danmark.2021-08-0816 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling32. Farvel til marinen og goddag til LondonI 1960 blev Steen Vedel utilfreds med sit arbejde i marinen som søofficer. Han var træt af den manglende forsvarsvilje og bevillinger, så han sagde op. Han brød familietraditionen, og det gav en del ballade. Sammen med sin kone Susi og sit første barn rejste han til London, og blev møbelhandler i firmaet Finmar hos Poul Ernst von Stemann. Han var en begavet bulderbasse, og Steen lærte en masse om danske designmøbler og kunst.2021-08-0108 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling31. Kæmpebryllup med Susi1957 blev året, hvor Steen spurgte Marchal of the Royal Air Force Sir William Dickson om hans datters hånd. Brylluppet blev aftalt til 16.dec. Han havde nær misset flyet til London efter en våd aften. 300 gæster kom til brylluppet bl.a. Lord Mountbatten, ambassadører og mange flere, end Steen havde forestillet sig. Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling30. Steen møder Susi i EnglandSteen blev færdig på officersskolen i 1953 og blev løjtnant af 2. grad. Han gjorde tjeneste på minestrygeren Søhesten og patruljerede Østersøen rundt for at holde øje med russerne. I 1956 udtages han til at deltage i et kommunikationskursus i England. Kort efter ankomst brød Suez-krisen efterfulgt af Ungarnskrisen ud, og han troede han ville blive hjemkaldt. Det skete ikke, så han blev i England og tog imod invitation til en countryhouse weekend. Her møder han for første gang Susanna Dickson. Hendes far skulle vise sig at være meget højt på strå, men det fortælle hun...2021-07-1815 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling29. Steen som spion i RuslandSom adjudant var Steen med på et flådebesøg til Leningrad i 1956 med fregatten Holger Danske. Han havde fået en hemmelig opgave af Forsvarsstabens Efterretningsafdeling. Han skulle fotografere hvad de byggede på Leninværftet. Der var mistanke om at det var et atomdrevet skib. Han fuldførte missionen, og det viste sig at være en atomdreven isbåd. Steen fik en flaske portvin for sit spionarbejde. Det blev en mindeværdig tur, som sluttede med, at søværnet fik en stor brun bjørn i gave fra det russiske folk. Den kom med hjem, og endte efter e...2021-07-1115 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling28. Kongeskibet i GrønlandUnder sin uddannelse til søofficer var Steen på sommertogt i Grønland. Skibet Dannebrog med Kong Frederik den 9. og onkel Aage ombord blev eskorteret af fregatten Holger Danske, hvor Steen gjorde tjeneste. De leverede bl.a. fersk vand til kongeskibet ved hjælp af en anordning de kaldte flodheste. Det var i 1952, og det var også det år Steen dummede sig foran general Eisenhower, som var på visit i Danmark.2021-07-0410 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling27. Marinen og kæmpe eksplosionEfter gymnasiet blev Steen frivillig lærling i marinen. Han klarede frasorteringsforløbet, og kom ind på kadetskolen. Han havde fag som dans, fægtning og idræt og det var en mental og fysisk anstrengelse i 3,5 år. Han husker især en grufuld oplevelse i 1951. Der lød et øredøvende brag, og alle ruderne på skolen splintrede. Et minedepot med søminer sprang i luften, og 18 mennesker døde. Braget forfulgt ham i 3 – 4 år.2021-06-2713 min

Sammen med sine kammerater dannede de karteller, hvor de hjalp hinanden med lektierne, f.eks. med matematikopgaverne. Dem der kunne mest trak det store læs. Han kunne både læse, skrive og regne hans klasselærer Fru Ternø gjorde ham til hjælpelærer. Det gav ham øgenavnet professor Spinat. Han oplevede også i første klasse sin første forelskelse. Hun hed Hanne og fik lov at låne hans flotteste glaskugle. Steen gik i tre forskellige skoler inden han kom på Metropolitanskolen. Steen og forfatter Klaus Rifbjerg mødte hinanden i studentertiden, og forblev venner indtil Rifbjerg døde i 2015. Steen var uenig med Klaus politisk og religiøst, men de havde empati for hinanden, og Steen mindes hans totale nærvær. Fællesinteressen var jagt. Bl.a. jagter til Ronda i Spanien.2021-05-2311 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling21. KonehjælpI hele Steens barndom havde hans mor konehjælp. Gifte kvinder, der gjorde rent hos andre fruer for at tjene en skilling. Fru Jørgensen, fru Frederiksen, fru Nilausen og endelig fru Henriksen, som var hos hans mor i 30 år. Via dem og besøg i deres hjem, fik han et indtryk af en anden livsform, som var langt fattigere end hans egen. Hans husker også damefrisøren som kom i hjemmet for at krølle morens hår. På et spritapparat blev krøllejernet lagt, og Steen var fascineret af processen med at lave de fineste bølger i håret.2021-05-1607 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling20. En opvækst uden en farDet var en katastrofe for Steens mor at blive enke i 1933. Hun giftede sig aldrig igen, men gjorde alt hvad hun kunne for at passe på sine to børn. Steen kom bl.a. ofte i seng ved mindste tegn på sygdom. Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling19. Steens forældreDet er både en vidunderlig og trist historie om Steen forældre. De fandt hinanden i 1930 som henholdsvis 34 og 32- årige på Vejlefjord Sanatorium. Her arbejdede mor Margrethe og far Erik var indlagt med tuberkulose. De udvekslede mange breve, og Steen læser op fra det første brev. Erik Vedel var ligesom sin bror viceadmiral Aage Vedel uddannet indenfor søværnet. Han sejlede på verdenshave og tog bl.a. en malajbjørn med hjem fra østen. Steen var to år, da hans far døde af tuberkulose.2021-05-0212 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling18. Krigen og Steens morSteen var 9 år, da Anden Verdenskrig brød ud. Hans mor græd den 9. april, kan han huske. Han husker også hans afdøde fars gode ven Kommandør Mørk, Mr. Dark, som arbejdede i efterretningstjenesten/modstandsbevægelsen. Han kom i deres hjem, hvor der blev holdt illegale møder. Befrielsen var en fest. Steens mor forsøgte at holde sammen på det hele, men hendes humør var præget af depressioner.2021-04-2514 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling17. Farmor og læsehesten SteenSteens bedstemor, Charlotte Vedel født Braëm, var den sidste i Danmark af slægten Braëm. Hun inspirerede Steen til at læse i en tidlig alder, og Steen har siden været en læsehest. Hun døde i 1942 og nåede lige at se sin søn Aage Vedel blive viceadmiral. Hendes kiste blev båret af seks søofficerer i fuld galla til familiegavestedet ved Hørsholm Kirke.2021-04-1812 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling16. Tante Agnete giftede sig med en greveAgnete Vedel (f.1895) blev gift med grev Carl Ahlefeldt-Laurvig og fik seks børn, som er Steen Vedels fætre og kusiner. Greven forlod sin kone, og det tilgav tante Agnete ham aldrig. Et af børnene blev nazist under krigen. Hans Ditlev blev Oberstrumführer i Frikorps Danmark til stor fortrydelse for familien. Efter krigen dukkede hans enke op hos Steens farmor med et barn på armen.2021-04-1109 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling15. Onkel Aage efter krigenØverste chef for søværnet, Onkel Aage Vedel, var Steen Vedels store forbillede. Han var bl.a. årsag til, at Steen gik ind i søværnet. Efter at onkel Aage havde beordret flåden sænket i 1943 opfordrede han alle søofficererne til at tilslutte sig modstandsbevægelsen ligesom han selv. I krigens sidste år boede onkel Aage sjældent hjemme, da han var bange for at blive taget af tyskerne. Han overnattede bl.a. i en jordhule i Forstbotanisk Have i Charlottenlund. En hule der normalt opbevarede planter og redskaber. Her lå han med pistolen under puden, fortæl2021-04-0412 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling14. Onkel Aage sænker flåden under 2. VerdenskrigI 1943 forlangte tyskerne, at alt hærens- og søværnets materiel skulle udleveres uden modstand. Det fik Steens onkel Aage til at iværksætte den største modstandsaktion under krigen. Han gav ordre til at sænke flådens skibe, da de ellers ville overgå til tyskerne. 32 skibe sank ved aktionen.2021-03-2806 min
Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling13. Verdenskrig og onkel AageBesættelsen af tyskerne under 2. Verdenskrig var en ydmygelse og en skandale. Det var alt for let for tyskerne at besætte Danmark ifølge Steen Vedel. Danmarks renommé led et knæk internationalt. ”Når man så en hund ligge på ryggen og sprælle, så sagde man ”Oh, he is doing a Copenhagen”.2021-03-2106 min

Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling11. Norgestur i 1946I 1946 tog Steens mor sine to børn med til Norge. Det var Steen første tur til et udland. I fødselsdagsgave fik han en flyvetur hjem. Det var en fest at komme til Norge lige efter krigen. Nordmændene huskede bl.a. at danskerne under krigen indsamlede havregrynspakker og sendte til Norge, da der var knaphed på mad. Steen var 15 år opdagede også på turen citat; ”Hvilken magisk kraft smukke kvinder har på mænd”.2021-03-0710 min

Ugens Sten - En livsfortælling9. Sommerhuset i Tisvilde 1Sommerhuset i Tisvilde var paradis for Steen i sin barndom. Han tilbragte mange sommerferier i huset nær stranden. Hun var ugift og sygeplejerske og bragte liv og indtryk udefra ind i Steens liv. Min bedste ven, kaldte Steen hende. Hun lærte han bl.a. at spille Konsekvens.2021-02-1414 min
