In Walks a Woman
Kansas Story-Shapers: Clarina Nichols, Annie Diggs, & Mamie Dillard with Dr. Sarah Bell, Kansas Museum of History Director
If you’re into Women’s History, you will LOVE this episode. Dr. Sarah Bell, Director of the newly-renovated Kansas Museum of History in Topeka, Kansas, joins IWAW and shares fascinating stories of three Kansas women: Clarina Nichols, Annie Diggs, & Mamie Dillard. In the 19th century, the story of women was supposed to take place–exclusively–in the “home,” and yet, everything outside the home profoundly affected women. The only way forward was to change the narrative. And that’s what these three women did, rewriting women’s story through writing, public speaking, teaching, and mentoring.

"Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" by Annie Dillard
“Pilgrim at Tinker Creek” by Annie Dillard is a work of creative nonfiction about seeing the natural world. Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Tinker Creek, Dillard observes muskrats, praying mantises, and shifting seasons with wonder and unease, asking what nature reveals about beauty, cruelty, and the presence of God. Is it transcendent or tedious? Profound or pretentious? Hosts Kacy and Tyler wade into Dillard’s vivid prose and big questions to help you decide if “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek” is a life-changing classic or simply not your stream.

Annie Dillard is verbally vibrant and deadly in description. But it’s the nature of the solstice season too, impeccably balanced, a knife’s edge of mortality and vitality. Passages featured in this solstice reading bonus episode are from Dillard’s Pilgrim at Tinker Creek (1974) and The Writing Life (1989).

Pilgrimage, Poetry, and the Stump
In this season of my Creative Pilgrimage, I have journeyed with three guiding voices: the ancient poetry of Isaiah, Annie Dillard’s sharp meditations in Pilgrim at Tinker’s Creek, and Mary Oliver’s prayerful verse in Devotions. Each writer has shaped how I see my place and survival in a world filled with dread, renewal, and glimpses of the Divine.Isaiah’s writing commands with the authority of vision and prophecy, inviting awe at creation—a rhythm that binds community and Creator through urgent lyric and sacred metaphor. Isaiah declares,“The mountains and hills shall break forth into s...

So, how do you feel right now?I don’t know about you, but I’m very aware of how much I need to lean into God.That’s partly an acknowledgement of the limitations I feel as I wear multiple hats (work, creativity, parenthood, plain ol’ life). It’s also a recognition that I’m stepping out of a complex and difficult season into new and exciting things. How about you?In this short episode I chat about practicing silence and share from two must-read books, one from Malcolm Muggeridge and the othe...

Annie Dillard Just Took Me to Church
The other day, Naomi Gordon-Loebl tweeted a screenshot of some wisdom of Annie Dillard and I realized I had to —no, I needed to—share it with y’all here. “One of few things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book, or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Somethin...
