故事中的主角 Balram 是一位出身於貧民窟的低階種姓印度人，小時候非常上進，在課堂上獲得老師賞識，並讚賞他是一個叢林裡百年難得一見的白老虎，但後來由於父親生病，而為了家人生計，被迫休學開始工作，包括敲煤及進入茶館工作。但他不願就這樣過完一輩子，後來靠著小聰明成了家鄉地主的兒子的司機，並且開始生活在地主家。 在他看到富人是怎麼過生活，被權力財富的圍繞後，再加上根深蒂固的種姓制度及孝順家庭觀念而遭受到的屈辱及壓力，他決定要翻身，不論是透過什麼樣的手段，為自己撕下貧窮的標籤，成為那隻「白老虎」。

今天我們想跟大家聊聊一部1994年上映的紐西蘭電影 — Once Were Warriors，劇中講述著現代毛利原住民的文化、生活困境並帶出了長久存在於紐西蘭社會的家庭暴力等議題。
故事講述生活在紐西蘭奧克蘭郊區的一個貧困的毛利人家庭，丈夫Jake失業酗酒並有家暴傾向，妻子Beth幾近獨立扶養五個小孩，卻也狠不下心離開丈夫。雖然Beth極力想維持家庭的和諧，可是在充滿暴力和酒精壟罩的陰影下，大兒子Nig加入了黑道幫派，二兒子Boogie被逮捕送往少年管教所，而大女兒Grace則分擔起了Beth的責任照顧兩個小小孩，但仍然不敵日後悲劇的發生，進而導致最終家庭的碎裂。
