This is how my guest for this week’s Legal Lens show describes the Section 14 area of Palm Springs, CA. This was once a thriving community until a series of forced removals by the City of Palm Springs in the 1950s - 1960s, which took place with little or no notice, and sometimes destroyed houses with personal belongings inside. The Section 14 area of Palm Springs is a one-mile stretch of desert east of downtown Palm Springs, owned by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, now home to the tribe’s namesake hot spring, which is central to the tribe's traditional life and attracted the desert’s first wellness resorts in the 1880s.
