毫无疑问，是陈丹青把“绘画”带回了中国人的视野。是陈丹青让“绘画问题”成为当代中国人的文化问题之一。“绘画”因为他成为公共话题。
“绘画已经过时了”，这可能是陈丹青众多断论中，最精彩的一个“谎言”。
这期节目的来源跟两条视频有关。
其一是無界限講堂第一季「陳丹青：母語與母國」https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdNRyOoftVI ，是陈丹青2014年在新加坡做的演讲，汉言在华人世界的流变以及身份的认同是主要话题，其中讲到他的祖父陈兆炽从台湾回到大陆的旧事；另一个视频是陈丹青在尤伦斯当代艺术中心参加的一次圆桌对谈，中国绘画高峰论坛《一场关于绘画当代性问题的讨论》https://video.artron.net/c5005.html ，陈丹青提到“绘画已经过时”，“绘画是私人问题”，“白人的绘画已经无话可说”，等观点。
从陈丹青回国，到他成为媒体人物，越来越多的中国人，特别是年轻人，通过他的眼睛和讲述，（再次）把绘画当作一回事了，并且从一个海外华人，上海人，艺术家，右派之子，国名党军官之孙的眼光，穿越各自的语境的局限，重新看待中国文化的丰富层次，认识当下的生存现状。
但这一切影响都来自于，陈丹青首先是一个公众人物，媒体人物，而他驾驭媒体的能力可能是被很多人忽略的。而中国众多的艺术家中似乎也只有他具备通过媒体与大众交流的能力。
