Baz Luhrmann
Few icons are as globally memorialized as Elvis Presley, but for “Elvis" filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, the biopic felt like "a blank sheet to explore” American history, commercialization and the true origin of rock 'n' roll: Black music. In this episode of “The Envelope,” Luhrmann shares his unique take on Presley’s tragic story, how Austin Butler was able to “meld his soul with Elvis' soul” and how a pair of socks connected a young Baz to the King. How Baz Luhrmann betrayed Elvis’s music, culture, and most of all, the soul of the man. Part 1. (Repost, edited)
This is a repost and heavily edited version of my 'Elvis Fan responds to Baz Luhrmann's movie' podcast. The film has received enough praise, excessively so, globally, but, happily, at least some critics and many fans have not been blinded by the hype. This is the first of three podcasts on the subject.

You may know writer-director-producer Baz Luhrmann from such expensive spectacles as The Great Gatsby, Australia, and Moulin Rouge! Co-hosts Dolores and Eileen talk about Luhrmann's hysterically melodramatic films and disagree sharply on how successfully his new biopic Elvis represents the life and career of legendary performer Elvis Presley, debating in particular how the film stands on the entrenched "Elvis authenticity thesis."

‘Elvis’: Baz Luhrmann raises the enormous monument that the king of rock deserved in the most overwhelming musical biopic of the century
Baz Luhrmann, the Australian director behind stylized films such as 'Moulin Rouge!' (2001) and 'The Great Gatsby' (The Great Gatsby, 2013) has made his first biopic with 'Elvis', the most spectacular, great and audacious vision of the king of rock made so far, with a budget of 85 million dollars that leaves all other attempts in the bunch and stands as the most vibrant and noisy film of its genre made so far this century.Neither the neat British comedy of 'Bohemian Rhapsody', nor the creative musical numbers and honesty of 'Rocket Man' come close to the cinematic experience proposed by...

One Hit Wonder EP 2 Baz Luhrmann:
It’s still kind of puzzling that Baz Luhrmann, predominantly a director and screenwriter known for films like Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet, briefly crossed over into the music industry, because he’s not a musician in any respect. His highly successful single “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” is a spoken word piece where Luhrmann recites the poem “Wear Sunscreen” by journalist Mary Schmich (not Kurt Vonnegut, as it was so widely believed), which she wrote as a theoretical speech to a graduating class, over bright, hopeful and unobtrusive music that gives the inspirational, clever lyrics ample space to shine.
