Oh God, What Now?
Burnham down the house – Is Starmer really under threat?
Seems like King in the North Andy Burnham fancies his chances of taking over Labour and giving the troubled government new direction. Is talk of a leadership fight just pot-stirring – or is Starmer in real trouble? And who else is in the frame? Plus, that video where maverick crimefighter Robert Jenrick chases faredodgers was roundly mocked. But is it smart politics in the Tories’ battle with Reform over the soul of Pissed-Off Britain? And in the Extra Bit for Patreon people, we read Sarah Vine’s Westminster tell-all so you don’t have to. • Don’t miss the latest Cri...

Michael Dease • Grove's Groove © 2024 Le Coq Records #jazz
On 20 October 1996, around 300,000 people took to the streets of Brussels following the arrest of Marc Dutroux and the abandonment of a wider enquiry. Amid claims of corruption, the affair deeply shocked the nation. The mass protest was directed at Dutroux, the police, justice system and politicians, as well as being a public show of sympathy for the victim’s families. The Casa Pia case is highlighted in episode three of the new Netflix documentary series about Madeleine McCann. John Patitucci, Vinnie Colaiuta & Bill Cunliffe • Trio®️2021 #bebop
#bebop

Podcast 813: A Conversation with Bill Cunliffe - Part Two
Podcast 813 completes my two-part conversation with pianist Bill Cunliffe, whose latest release, Trio features bassist John Patitucci and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta joining him for a set of standards. Bill had two master musicians as mentors during his formative years - drummer Buddy Rich, who became one of his first employers, and pianist Mary Lou Williams, his teacher at Duke University. I couldn't let our talk end without asking Bill for some stories about both, and he does not disappoint in this podcast. We also talk about his students and music education at Cal State, and how he sees...

Podcast 812: A Conversation with Bill Cunliffe, Part One
Sometimes the must exciting jazz recordings come from coincidence. Trio, the recent release on the new Le Coq Records imprint, is one of those coincidences. Veteran pianist Bill Cunliffe has been acting as something of a house arranger and musical director for many of the newly launched imprint’s projects, and when he and the highly sought-after bassist John Patitucci and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta found themselves with a few extra hours of studio time after working on an Andy James vocal session, label founder/producer Piero Pata urged them to record a set of standards off the cuff...

Jazz in Family
