#348 - WE ARE TYLER ANDREWS SHOOTING FOR THE EVEREST SPEED RECORD
Tyler Andrews is a good friend with whom I’ve done trips with to Peru, Ecuador, and most recently, the Atacama Desert of Chile where we climbed up to almost 20,000 feet. Ty was a self-described high school nerd musician who went on to be an average D3 cross country runner. After battling depression, Ty dedicated himself to becoming a pro mountain runner, which has seen him set numerous FKTs on some of the most iconic tall peaks in the world, including Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, and Cotopaxi. One recent FKT in the Himalayas has been commemorated in the very cool short fi...

#347 - WE ARE KAT EDWARDS ANDERSON BEATING EVERYTHING THE COCODONA 250 COULD THROW AT HER
One of the most badass racers I know is Kat Edwards Anderson. She has been on the WASP twice before, most recently on episode #327 in January, chatting about her runs at the Sedona Canyons 125 and the Moab 240. I first met her in Chile in March, 2024, where she impressively conquered many new challenges for her in the high Atacama Desert. She built on these experiences by overcoming blisters on her feet, menstrual cycle irregularities, heat, and mental hurdles to get on the podium at Moab. In this episode, Kat shares some great insights on her run in May at the...

#340 - WE ARE CHRIS FISHER AND ERIN TON ON MOUNTAIN ADVENTURES HIGHER THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE
Send us a textChris Fisher and Erin Ton are very down-to-Earth people, but they are also way-up-in-the-air. As in, they are almost constantly on a mountain, very high mountains. And when I say constantly, I mean they are pretty much always climbing, running on, and exploring mountains, as well as challenging themselves in the wildest wildernesses. Erin is known for setting hordes of FKTs, speeding through the gauntlet of Colorado 14ers in record time, as well as climbing 14ers in high heels. Yep, you heard that right. She and Chris, who owns the current record for t...

#327 - WE ARE KAT EDWARDS ANDERSON TURNING SCARY THINGS INTO BIG WINS
Let’s start off 2025 with someone who had a breakout 2024, and like the final episode of last year with Mary Denholm, in which there is a lot of great information from which to learn. I met the impressive Kat Edwards while on a mountain-climbing adventure with Tyler Andrews’ Chaski Endurance Collective in Chile’s Atacama Desert. This was the now-25-year-old’s first trip outside of the U.S., and in fact, she had barely even left the Eastern time zone before. It was part of a year in which she not only got out of her comfort zone, but she...

#320 - WE ARE CHAIWEN CHOU, NEVER LETTING OBSTACLES BLOCK HER DREAMS
I met Chaiwen Chou on the trip I took in March to the Atacama Desert of Chile that was led by Tyler Andrews of Chaski Endurance Collective. Two things immediately stood out about Chaiwen: one was her gorgeous purple hair, and the second was the boot on her foot. As you know, this was no tourist cruise, we were going to be climbing several very tall summits, the highest at almost 20,000 feet, on steep, loose terrain. You see, Chaiwen had broken her ankle a few weeks before the trip, and her doctor and physical therapist told her that the...

#300 - BILL'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE WAY UP HIGH IN CHILE
The We Are Superman Podcast has hit 300 episodes... we think. But thanks to David's impetus, inspirational WASP guests have touched millions of listeners around the world. Or at least thousands. After a quick historical recap, I'm honored to bring you my recounting of my truly amazing trip to Chile and climbing peaks in the Andes as high as almost 20,000 feet in the driest and one of the most remote spots on Earth, the Atacama Desert. Our trip included many impressive elite athletes, surprising sights, spectacular scenery, jaw-dropping starry night skies, and consuming so many wraps that I still haven't e...

#298 - WE ARE KAT EDWARDS, THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT
Send us a textThis past late winter I met a truly impressive group of athletes on a trip to the rugged and beautiful, high-elevation Atacama Desert of Chile. One of these is Kat Edwards of Richmond, Va. A relative newcomer to ultrarunning at 24 years old, and having never experienced performing at altitude, Kat crushed climbing peaks of 16,000 and 18,000 feet before tackling her first FKT attempt, on nearly 20,000-foot Nevado San Francisco on the border between Chile and Argentina. This same insanely difficult climb with 4400 feet in elevation gain over just 4.67 miles took me more than nine...

#259 - WE ARE TYLER ANDREWS CLIMBING HIGHER FOR FKTs
In this episode we re-visit with my favorite running nomad, Tyler Andrews, who is rarely stationary, infrequently in the same locale for any length of time. We last chatted on the WASP in episode 129 in May, 2021. I caught up with Tyler in a rare settled-down moment in Albuquerque. Tyler has a penchant for attempting and setting FKTs, fastest-known times, on both well-known and less-popular routes. Some of these include his recent FKT of Kilimanjaro, which most travelers take many days to hike up and down, but which he ran roundtrip in 6:37; Mt. Fuji, which we talk about here; the...

#224 - LEADVILLE DISAPPOINTMENT AND GRATITUDE
It’s taken a bit to process everything from my Leadville Trail 100. The race for me ended at Twin Lakes, mile 40. My plan to fuel and hydrate better by going out at a conservative pace was obviously too slow and might have worked better had I not expended so much mental and physical energy dealing with a lighting system that wasn’t bright enough and my dicey depth perception and balance that led me to being too cautious navigating the rockier, uneven trail sections. I was moving ok but with a thin margin for error when my left hamstring cram...

#189 - WE ARE BRIAN REYNOLDS RUNNING ON BLAZING BLADES
Would you find it inspiring to listen to an episode about a guy who can run a 16:49 5K, a 1:17 half-marathon, and a 3:03 marathon? Maybe a little. How about if I added that he has done it as a double-amputee? Oh yeah, that’s a lot different! I randomly met Brian Reynolds last summer during the Leadville Trail 100. We were both at Mitch Dulleck’s house on 4th Street not far from the finish line waiting in the cold wee hours of the night for a mutual friend, Tyler Andrews, who was on WASP episode #129 in May, to complete his first LT1...

#177 - WE ARE BETO DÁVALOS CONQUERING DEBILITATING DISEASE TO TAKE ON THE ROOF OF AMERICA
As you’ve already heard from me, I was in Ecuador in early- to mid-November on a trip lead by Tyler Andrews, whose many impressive FKTs landed him here on the WASP earlier this year. There were six of us on this expedition, including my travel sidekick, Jack. Our other leader was 22-year old Ecuadorian native Beto Dávalos. I ran with Beto on an early day of the trip while we were getting acclimated to Quito’s 9300-foot elevation, on a beautiful 20 km-long trail that stretches from a place called Cumbaya, yes, that’s its actual name, to another pa...

I’m excited to welcome Adrian Macdonald to the Hive. The leaves are now turning in Leadville, but a few weeks ago, Adrian won the Leadville Trail 100. Some of you might be legitimately asking, “Who is Adrian Macdonald?” At Winfield, 50 miles into the race, he was dueling for the lead with Hoka athlete Tyler Andrews, who appeared on WASP episode #129 in May, and Tyler said to me, “Who is this guy? He’s tough.” Adrian wasn’t yet a household name in Leadville, in fact, he’d never run a 100-mile race before. In the race preview articles, he didn’t garner the atte...
