Pod 50 Just relax
The effect of divorce on children can be profound, causing them emotional distress, a conflict of loyalties, regressive behaviors, academic and social issues, anger and rebellion. I in 4 children in the UK live in separated families, that 4m children or 30% of the total. The long-term effects on children when they become adults is mixed. Some thrive. The outcome is down to how their parents handled the divorce, and if there was on going conflict between the two partners. Eg when the child is a pawn or a messenger or even a spy !Kids need consistency, love and...

Pod 49 No time to tell her
Surprisingly 60% of all marriages in the UK last 20 years ( I would have thought it was much less). The average is about 13 years. As people get older death becomes the primary reason for a marriage ending, rather than divorce.45% of all marriages last 30 years and 25% last 40 years +. In the last group typically, the couple must have met in their 20’s and then both survive in their 60’s and 70’s. Of course, the stats relate to their legal position rather than if they are still happy being married ! That’s called ‘ an empty shell marriage’If a wife dies after a long...

Pod 48 Fast Lane
For those over 40 who are maybe divorced but are now wanting to start again, it’s a scary time. This song is about those people. Whilst everyone is different there are some common traits. It's described as the ‘gray divorce demographic’ ,which would put me off getting back on the horse ! Divorce or separation leads to loss and a loss of identity. Years of shared history disappear and the term husband or wife or couple. If you children have left home it compounds the empty best syndrome. You start to wonder who you are and where you are going, if any...

Pod 47 What if I am set free
Freedom is strange concept in some ways. For example, I find it much easier to write a poem with a fixed rhyming structure, than the freedom of writing with none. Discipline actually free’s me to write. Its one of the most complex subjects in human history, invading politics, philosophy, law and everyday life. There is negative freedom, where there is an absence of constraint. Then there is positive freedom , which is where you can release your own potential. There’s also inner freedom which comes from self control. I guess my rhyming poems are a bit of the last...

Pod 46 The perfect husband
What is the perfect husband ? , the title of my song we are unpicking ? Well let’s start with the perfect wife , shall we. Of course, what adds up to ‘perfect’ differs for all of us. It's probably better to think of what makes up a good relationship. The experts tell me ( PS I’m no expert !) it’s all down to mutual respect, trust and honesty, effective communication, kindness and empathy, shared vales and goals, independence, interdependence and a clear ‘sense of partnership’. Of course, these qualities should be reciprocal.Traditionally the perfect wife would be a homemaker and...

Pod 45 I just want revenge
The Count of Monte Cristo, escapes, earns a fortune then destroys the lives of the people who betrayed him. You meet revenge in Hamlet, in Moby Dick and the film Carrie, as she enacts revenge on her cruel class mates. The Reign of Terror in the French revolution was all about revenge, as was the murder of Franz Ferdinand, which then triggered WW1.We come across it in in Kill Bill, The Gladiator, The Revenant and John Wick. Then of course there is Johnny Depp v Amber Heard, songs from Talyor Swift about her ex-lovers and Donald Trump in h...

Respect for the office, the democratic process and the constitution is precious thing to hold on to. I’m also a big fan of good manners ( ‘manners maketh man’ )- ask my kids. When I see MP’s shouting and balling at each other in the House of Commons, I despair - they are running the bloody country ! What's wrong with a bit of common respect for each other. Of course, in place like Russia they is no opposition, no real debate, so the will of the people is lost. Trumps USA has become a fascinating place to people watch. To...

There are 193 countries in the world with only 15 run by women. Of the 193, about 65 are under authoritarian rule .Of these, only three are run by woman ( Serbia, Bangladesh, and Tajikistan).Women constitute 40% of the global workforce. About 23% of Board Directors seats are filled by women. Only 6% of the global prison population are women. Only 15% of all detected crimes are committed by women and only 10% of serious crimes.Sri Lanka was the first to elect a woman leader in 1960, followed by Israel in 1969 (Golda Meir) and of course Maggie Thatcher in 1966. This is a story about the USA/Mexico border. A significant and complex place that is the subject of political debate. The border is 1954 miles long, versus say the UK which is 600 miles long ( so over three times longer). It separates four US states ( Arizona, New Mexico, California and Texas) from six Mexican states. It includes cities, beeches, mountains, desserts and of course the Rio Grande River, which forms a natural border for 1254 miles, or 64% of the birder. The area has been the subject of many conflicts and treaties over the years. Only 650 miles of the border have some k...

The name word Millau ( pronounced Mee-yo)is the name of a town in the Occitanie region of France. Before the bridge was built the traffic had to pass through the town, causing major traffic jams. The bridge was conceived in 1987 and a design agreed in 1996 via a design competition. It took 3 y...

Happiness is subjective and measured in different ways in different cultures.75% of people report being moderately to very happy , whilst 25% report being not very happy or unhappy - which seems a lot to me. The World Happiness Report is the provider of data on this issue.Finland, Denmark and Iceland are the happiest nations with scores of 8 out of 10.The bottom countries are Afghanistan and Lebanon with scores of 2 out of 10. The USA is outside the top 20 scoring 6.5. About 50% of our happiness is genetic, 10% is down to circumstances, and 40% is down to our own actions, behaviors and...

There about 850 iconic wooden covered bridges still standing in the USA, from the thousands built in the first place. The idea originated in Europe with the Chapel Bridge in Switzerland built in then 14th century. They are mainly in Pennsylvania (200), New England, the Mid West (Ohio, Indiana, Oregon ). Theodore Burr patented the Burr Arch Truss bridge inn 1817. The strong design was capable of longer spans than seen before, and these are mainly the ones that still survive today. Various others came up with new designs for ‘roofing a bridge’. Today they are seen as an iconic and nostalgic part of Amer...

My grown-up children will tell you I drilled into them ‘manners maketh man’. They are both very polite. Second on my list are overused politically correct phrases like ‘lived experience’, ‘invalidate’, ‘gaslighting’, ‘marginalised’, ‘systemic’, ‘microaggression’, ‘deadnaming’, ‘do the work’, and ‘believe survivors’ – crikey not sure I know what all these mean !Top of the list is women referring to their partners, their ex-partners and their husbands as narcissists A lady I met rec...

Pod 9 Tomorrow shows no mercy
Survival rates depend on age ( the younger the better) and the type of cancer. Prostate cancer survival rates are as high as 88% , whilst liver cancer can be as low as 13%The good news is that survival rates in the UK, have doubled in the last 50 years. Catching the decease in stage 1 is critical, with survival rates of 90%. If it reaches stage 4 , then rates drop to 10%I have numerous friends and relatives who have been diagnosed with cancer and survived, albeit one or two have died. This song is about someone who has survived and is...

I was born to a family of seven with 5 sisters and one brother- only 2 in every 1000 families have seven children ! – gulp. We were brought up in council housing, part of the 8% of people in the UK ,living in council houses. Our parents divorced, like 8% of the population, versus married and single people. To say our childhood was stressful is an understatement. All my siblings live in the Uk except my brother. He is part of the 160,000 Briths ex pats that live in France. 5,700 people ( was 10,000 pre-Brexit) move to France every year from the UK, with abou...

This rises to 35% by the time they hit 75.Cancer is the leading cause of death for women over 50, which equates to 75% of all cancer deaths for women. Silent Assassin was first pushed as a poem in my Poetry Book ‘Poems and Sentiments’Later in 2024 I entered the poem into a competition in the USA and was successful. This single event led me, to write many more poems and books and eventually start writing song lyrics and podcasts etc. The song version was released as ‘A silent assassin is amongst us’The life expectancy in the UK for men, has increased from the age 66 in 1950 to 79, a...

Pod 5 We regret to inform you
This is a sad, sentimental song ,which listeners tell me, has made them cry. It’s my attempt to look at a subject from another point of view. It’s adapted from one of my early poemsThe Vietnam war lasted for nearly 9 years ending in 1975, after five Presidents. Albeit the conflict started 10 years earlier. Ho Chi Minh ( a communist revolutionary in the north) rebelled against French Colonial Rule to demand independence for Vietnam, whilst the Americans feared the domino effect and the rise of communism.About 1.4m Vietnamese soldiers died on both sides and 58,000 US s...

Pod 3 The only way to win the war
This is another attempt at apolitical song- allowing the listeners to make up their own mind about an issue. This is a song about the Kamikaze pilot suicide attacks on allied shipping at the in 1944/45. The word Kamikaze means ‘divine wind’.Japan was losing the war, so Vice Admiral Onishi proposed using young pilots to fly planes packed with explosives into enemy ships. They were 21 years old ‘volunteers’ on a divine mission. There task was carried out with great ceremony involving keepsakes, prayers, a last meal, white headbands and so on. The divorce rate in 2022, was is 7 divorces for every 1000 marriages, with on average marriage lasting 13 years in the UK. In total it added up to 80,000 divorces. The rate has however dropped significantly; it was 40% higher in 1997. This is due to less marriages, people marrying later, people living together and a change in attitudes i.e. there is no longer a stigma about bearing children outside of marriageThe wife is the most likely to file for divorce. Divorce rates for the over 65’s however are growing, affectionally known as the silver splitters. People in their late 40’s are...

There are about 4300 religions in the world, led by Christianity ( 31%), Islam ( 25%, Hinduism (15%) and .Buddhism 7%. The majority believe in some concept of the afterlife. It could be called heaven, paradise or even re incarnation. The word heaven comes from many sources, but the old English version comes from the word heofon – meaning the sky or the abode of Gods and Angels. There seems to be no scientific evidence of the existence of heaven, so it's surprising that so many people believe in its supernatural presence. For what's its worth I don’t believe in heaven.Nea...
