New Books in Buddhist Studies
Naomi Appleton, "Many Buddhas, One Buddha: A Study and Translation of Avadānaśataka 1-40" (Equinox, 2020)
Naomi Appleton's new book Many Buddhas, One Buddha: A Study and Translation of Avadānaśataka 1-40 (Equinox Publishing, 2020) introduces a significant section of the important early Indian Buddhist text known as the Avadānaśataka, or “One Hundred Stories”, and explores some of its perspectives on buddhahood. This text, composed in Sanskrit and dating to perhaps the third to fifth centuries of the Common Era, is affiliated with the Sarvāstivāda or Mūlasarvāstivāda, and thus provides important evidence of the ideas and literatures of lost non-Mahāyāna schools of Indian Buddhism. The text is a rich liter...

Shantideva on kindness of Buddhas and Sentient Beings (in Tib. & Eng.)
In this brief teaching, Geshe Sonam Ngodup explores the reason why the kindness of the enlightened ones (the Buddhas) and kindness of Sentient beings is equal. Also, why we depend on sentient beings for our own Spiritual development towards Enlightenment. He explains this using a verse from Bodhicaryāvatāra by Shantideva. Geshe la teaches in Tibetan and his teachings are translated by Venerable Khedrup. The reason why the Buddhas and all sentient beings are similarly kind. From Shantideva's Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra A Buddha's qualities are gained From sentient beings and Conquerors (Buddhas) alike, So why do I not respect them (sentient beings) In the same way I respect Conquerors? Buddhas appear troublesomely
It’s perfectly possible to meditate completely alone and do well, but an essential nutrient can get missed if that is all we have - relationships with others. The Buddha’s attendant Ananda once remarked to him ”I’ve been thinking that community, Sangha, is half the spiritual life”; the Buddha replied "don’t say that Ananda, the *whole* of the spiritual life is within community, within Sangha”. In this talk Daizan Roshi explains about how we can use our relationships with others, particularly the more challenging ones (what he refers to as our troublesome Buddhas), to enrich and deepen our practice.
