Witness History: Witness Archive 2016The Buddhas of BamiyanIn March 2001 the Taliban destroyed huge ancient statues of Buddha in Afghanistan. The statues were carved into the cliffs above the Bamiyan valley. Sayid Mirza Hossein, a local farmer, was taken prisoner by the Taliban and forced to pack explosives around the ancient Buddhas. He told Witness what it felt like to destroy something that he had seen every day of his life.
