Stalled U.S. Forest Service project could have protected California town from Caldor Fire destruction
By Scott RoddBy Scott Rodd (CapRadio), George LeVines (The California Newsroom), Emily Zentner (CapRadio) Before the Caldor Fire sparked one year ago this week — before its 150-foot flames devoured century-old ponderosa pines in California’s Sierra Nevada, and before it destroyed more than 400 of the 600 homes in Grizzly Flats — Mark Almer had a plan. The 60-year-old retired fire inspector had spent over a decade fireproofing his Grizzly Flats home, trading wood deck boards for composite material and replacing traditional siding with a protective cement shell. “Hardening the home is huge,” he said. “But...

Two Yosemite area wildfires have residents on edge. Here’s what they went through this week.
By Manola Secaira Before his three children left for summer camp, Michael Henderson gave them the talk. It was a new kind of talk. He told them to look at everything they owned and ask themselves: What would they save from a fire? Henderson’s family lives in Wawona, a small community located inside Yosemite National Park. They were one of many families in the region who were forced to flee their homes this summer in the wake of wildfires — in their case, the Washburn Fire in early July. It was a trick...

Newsom hailed this 'critical' wildfire-prevention program. Two years on, it hasn't completed a single project
By Scott RoddIn the foothills of Mendocino County, where stretches of flat grazing land give way to thick brush and towering conifers, sits the community of Brooktrails. Idyllic, picturesque — and primed for burning. Most of its 3,800 residents fled their homes in 2020 when the Oak Fire ignited north of town. Evacuees funneled onto Sherwood Road, the only route down the hillside and away from the flames. Residents fear the next blaze could burn straight across the community and the town's only evacuation route won't be enough. But the people of Brooktrails don...

Interview: Butte County District Attorney on prosecuting PG&E for another wildfire
By Mike Hagerty This week, Cal Fire released the results of its investigation into the Dixie Fire, which burned more than 900,000 acres in five counties and destroyed 1,600 buildings. The investigation found that the second-largest wildfire in recorded California history began when an electrical wire owned by PG&E came in contact with a tree west of Cresta Dam in Butte County. The report's been forwarded to the district attorney of Butte County, Michael Ramsey, who prosecuted PG&E for the 2018 Camp Fire. The utility pleaded guilty to 84 counts of felony manslaughter in that case.

In this edition of CapChat, we’ll round up the last week’s fire news, the role Gov. Gavin Newsom has played as citizens’ advocate for those affected by successive power shut-offs, while repeatedly publicly blasting PG&E for lack of investment and not managing vegetation to prevent wildfires. Newsom has also said part of the problem has been a “cozy relationship” between the California Public Utilities Commission and PG&E. In addition, Newsom has suggested if the CPUC doesn’t do what he wants it to do with respect to PG&E, he’d try to remove commissioners. CapRadio’...

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Midnight Deadline
California’s state legislative session has finally concluded, with Gov. Gavin Newsom signing bills late into the night on Sunday. Included in the bills the governor signed this term are the country’s strongest protections for renters, expanded health insurance coverage and legislation intended to lower the cost of prescription drugs. Other measures signed address efforts to prepare the state for impending natural disasters, wildfire safety, economic resiliency and clean drinking water. The governor also vetoed quite a number of bills. In addition, the state has filed over 60 lawsuits — either alone or in conjunction with other states — against the...

TahoeLand: TahoeLand Live!
This is our last episode of TahoeLand. I know, it’s really sad. But this season has come to an end. And to celebrate, we hosted a live podcast taping in South Lake. This is a shorter version of that 90-minute event. We invited listeners to join us at a resort called Edgewood Tahoe. There were these floor-to-ceiling windows that revealed a panorama of the lake. This live version of TahoeLand is a little different — and a little longer — than our other episodes. You’ll hear from scientists, city leaders and a story or two from loc...

TahoeLand: The Political Climate
A common theme CapRadio’s Ezra David Romero hears while hanging out in Tahoe is residents disappointed that their elected official in Congress does not believe in human-caused climate change. If 97 percent of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities, why aren’t politicians doing more about it? This perceived disconnect has caused people you wouldn't expect to jump into the political game and run for local office. And they’re running under the banner of doing something about climate change. But don’t worry: This epis...

TahoeLand: ‘Locals Season’
Climate change is impacting everyday life for Lake Tahoe’s locals: Rich and poor, old timers and newcomers. These year-round residents, whose jobs are often to make sure tourists enjoy Tahoe, are being forced to adapt in order to make it. For some, it's heart wrenching. But for others, it’s giving them a new vision for Tahoe’s future.

TahoeLand: Bad News, Bears
Climate change isn’t just altering how people experience Lake Tahoe, it’s also impacting animals. And perhaps the most prominent victim are the kings of the forest: bears. Part of the problem is there is not a top-down, unified approach for how to keep black bears out of our garbage and trash. Our leftovers and waste lead to human-bear interactions — and that’s ultimately bad news for bears. Bears in Tahoe are also hibernating less — if at all. And it’s not just the black bears feeling the impact of climate change — polar bears, grizzlies and o...

TahoeLand: Bye, Bye Snow
Tahoe’s identity as a winter wonderland is in jeopardy. One of the most noticeable signs of warming temperatures in Tahoe are changes to the snowpack. Specifically, researchers forecast a lot less of it some years and a ton more other years. That has huge ramifications for everything from businesses that rely on snow to Olympians figuring out how to practice their winter sports.

TahoeLand: The Shrimp Problem
Invasive shrimp are threatening Lake Tahoe. These are not the big white and orange crustaceans you get in a taco or on top of pasta. They’re called Mysis shrimp, and they’re voracious invaders that threaten Tahoe’s blue hue. If they stay and multiply, it’ll be hard to keep Tahoe from turning green. But if we remove them, they might also help other communities unlock climate change solutions. And the shrimp aren’t alone. They are joined by other invasive species, including three pound goldfish and cannibalistic bullfrogs.

Lake Tahoe is perhaps the most popular lake in the West. What people don’t know is that the lake’s blue hue is also a barometer of how climate change is impacting our world.

CapChat: Previewing The California Democratic Party Convention
This is a big week in the California State Legislature. We’ve reached that point in the calendar where bills must pass the house where they originated. Big items on that list are police use of force and several others. Also, the California Democratic Party Convention is this weekend in San Francisco. Fourteen presidential candidates are slated to attend. (Former Vice President, Joe Biden is not attending. He’ll be in Ohio) This alone suggests the importance of California to the 2020 election. Jonathan Kauffman’s “Hippie Food” introduces us to the people who changed what we eat. Prior to the 1960s, our meals were in a Cold War rut. The counterculture turned us onto food that freed us from that lifestyle. The result was the popular consumption of tofu, brown rice, yogurt and something called granola. CapRadio’s Donna Apidone spoke with Kauffman about the political and spiritual reasons these foods became mainstream. Interview Highlights: What inspired you to write this history of “Hippie Food”?
