Pas in 2016 toen het Nederlandse label Brilliant Classics ze op cd zette kwam er beweging in. Er bestaat wel een uitgave uit 1993 maar die wordt weggezet als ‘te academisch’, en maakte al bij al weinig indruk. Het allereerste kwartet in c-klein schreef de veertienjarige Bruch in 1852 maar werd pas in 2013 teruggevonden en uitgegeven. Dat wil zeggen de hoekdelen, want de middendelen 2 (Adagio) en 3 (Scherzo, Allegro molto) zijn oerversies van het 'officiële' eerste kwartet op. 9 (ook in c-klein) uit 1858. In zijn koorwerken bijvoorbeeld valt meteen het werk ‘Frithjof’ op maar ook zijn liederencycli zijn interessante en hoogst onbekende pareltjes. Frithjof op. 23 Dit werk uit 1864 heet volledig ‘Frithjof: Szenen aus der Frithjof-Sage’. Het betreft hier een cantata die gebaseerd is op een dertiende eeuwse Ijslandse saga, die werd herwerkt door de Zweedse dichter Esaias Tegner. Zijn eerste vioolconcerto uit 1867 was zoals in aflevering 1 aangehaald een doorslaand succes, zodanig zelfs dat het al zijn latere werken heeft overschaduwd. Het leven is niet makkelijk als je voor 1 werk bekend staat en tegelijkertijd in de schaduw leeft van andere componisten zoals Johannes Brahms en Felix Mendessohn, naar wie Bruch zelf ook opkeek. Hij stierf dus precies honderd jaar geleden en dat maakt van 2020 een jubileumjaar. 2020 staat dan misschien vooral bekend omwille van het 250ste geboortejaar van Ludwig van Beethoven, Max Bruch verdient zeker evenveel aandacht. Dat doen we dit voorjaar met een acht-delige serie over zijn leven en zijn werk.
