Introduced to the city by a mysterious old black man, Sam later gets lost and eventually takes refuge in the mechanical swan which floats in the lake by the boardwalk. While sleeping in the swan, he is awakened by people outside discussing a murder. Preparing to defend himself, he instead slices his hand with a knife, but manages to avoid detection.
