Stop Micromanaging
Excessive talking on the radio. Bosses constantly questing your every move. Officers not being consistent. Chiefs trying to run a fireground when they are not on the scene. This are just a peek into the world of micromanaging. So why do some bosses do this? It is a trust issue between the chief and the firefighters. They don't have faith in their own skills, and they project that onto their firefighters and junior officers. Communication is the key to fix it. Suck Less Do better!

The best training will keep you from sucking
Training is key to being your best. Unfortunately training academies have moved away from class A burn buildings and towards propane fueled fires with fake smoke. We are not preparing the new firefighters for real fires. Burn rooms are just empty rooms with no obstacles to contend with. The fires are always in the same place every time. Acquired structures to burn in are becoming a thing of the past, and we are letting citizens and politicians dictate the type of training we can do, yet they demand the best from us without giving us the tools to...

How do we learn? Time to change.
Have you ever said to yourself "this meeting could have been in an email." How do we learn? I believe the fire department is behind the times. Are you still required to get in your car and drive to your academy to sit in a classroom while the instructor reads PowerPoint slides? COVID taught us we can learn virtually, so why aren’t we doing this in the fire service? We need to change with the times and explore new options of teaching and learning.

Did you know you may not know what you think know?
Do you know people who think they know more than they do? We all know people like this. In public safety these people can be dangerous to the employees, the public and the organization. Why do the dumbest people represent us?
Health care workers in Maryland are not protected from assault like first responders. The blame for this lack of protection rests squarely on the shoulders of the elected politicians. It is no secret that some of the dumbest people represent us on the state and federal level. The citizens deserve so much better. Communication and decision making
I had a great talk with Frank Ricci. I continue to talking about communication. Being able to talk and listen are core skills you must possess to be a successful leader. Being able to make decisions is key when operating on the fireground. Decision making starts when you are a new firefighter and you continue to hone that skill as you move forward in your career, so you can make decisions with incomplete intel. As better information comes in you will be able fine tune your decision making on the fly.

Communications
If you read any NIOSH report you will find that a lack of communications was a factor in most firefighters injuries or death. In business poor communications can cost money and people their jobs. Being a skilled communicator is an art. You have to be a good talker, but more importantly you have to be a good listener. You have to put your ego in check and be open to what others have to say. In this episode I talk with Battalion Chief Sam Villani about talking with your people and listening them. The power of accurate...

Take care of of your people
I am joined once again with my good friend Sam Villani. Sam and I talk about how to encourage your people. Leaders say "I take care of my people" but do they walk the walk or just talk the talk. Taking care of them when they are down, boosting their confidence and letting them take the lead. As a leader it is important to build your people up and get them ready for the next level in their careers. Treat your people as if they are the most important part of the organization.
